Hi, I am new to this forum. I work with a good friend of mine on a small fleet of 4 volvo semi tractors in the cincinnati, ohio area. We are having fits with one of the trucks. It is very hard to start and we know it's building up fuel pressure way too slowly with the guage hooked to the test port and we have tried everything within our scope and still having the same trouble. The other three tractors will rise to 20 or 25 really quickly and then start right up but this one hovers at around 5 psi for a while and then slowly rises to starting pressure. It sometimes starts and sometimes runs the batteries almost dead. I am no expert but I know we did several things in an attempt to diagnose this thing. I don't know what additional info someone on here might need to help but please let me know and I will do my best to provide it. Thanks

Toss the vin of the truck up here. So we can see what kind of engine you have. Guessing a D12 but there are a few different models.
-
I sugest D12C and there is stock fuel pump on it, and stock pressure limiting valve) all this stuff is worn.

Hey guys thanks for the replies. I just now got back on here. The engine is a N-14 Cummins. I believe it's a 435 Horse. I can get the VIN # but it won't be until tomorrow. Thanks

Sticking shut off solenoid? Fuel line clogged?
-
N14 got no fuel pressure sensor, like Mercedes and Series 60, so the only way to use wet gauge. Next morning open the hood, hook up the gauge and ask someone to crank engine. N14 starts with 5-6 BAR on gauge and runs with over 16 BAR (up to 22 BAR).

Air sucking?
-
may be...............

really to find crack on fuel line pressure test is used, but I saw many cracks on fuel intake in tank, clogged fuel intake and many other problems.
Anyway, it seems to me fuel pump goes bad. bad fuel pump sucks air too -
Check valve in the ECM cooling plate. Start there. Usually gets stuck open w/ gunk from fuel and will cause the unit to start hard.
