OK here it goes, I have spent the last couple of weeks reading the forums and quite frankly there are some very gifted writers in this bunch. (Seems like some are highly educated and truly love what they do!)
I have started contacting some company's to just get a feel of what to expect and to try to get some valuable information straight from the horses mouth. I made contact with Schneider first and was on hold for a very long time(no one seems to be at work today), so I will get back to this one in a bit. My second company I called was Werner. As a active military going to be discharged very soon, they reported to me I can use VA benefits and make an extra $9300.00 for my first year. Does this make sense to anybody? Has anyone tried this with any success?
My third company I called was JB Hunt. I know that this company does not have a very good track record for drivers in this forum, but they are advertising offering free training for Vets and family members of the company drivers somewhere in Oklahoma. I specifically asked if I had to sign a contract and was told, "no!" But, I had to sign a promissory note to stay with a company for the year. Does anybody know the difference here? I am not sure if I completely understand the difference between a promissory note and a contract. Is there a different penalty if I break a note instead of a contract? This does seem a bit out of place, however I have been wrong before.
I will try to contact Schneider again tomorrow, I am having difficulty getting through, nobody is picking up the telephone. But, for now this seems to be a decent company to start out in and the likely source for me to obtain my cdl. I am looking forward to sharing the roads with all soon.
1Schneider, 2Werner, 3 JB Hunt?

The promissory note means no free training for Vets.....It is the same deal they tell everybody.......
Be very wary of Werner and anything they promise you. I would check with a Vets organization concerning Werner's claims -
i wouldn't expect any company to train you without a contract...or what they call a "promisory note". the company would lose if they trained folks with no strings attatched.

Before, I retired from the military. I attended a driving school and the military paid every penny of it. All I had to cover was the transportation to and from the school. I told the education office I wanted to go to the most accredited school they could find and they set it up for me. In the old days they wouldnt cover the cost of trade schools but during the Clinton administration that was changed to cover any schooling. I am not a Clinton fan but will give him credit for that one.
I worked for Werner for 1 year and dont have a major issue with them but I dont think the program they are offering is the way to go. If you went to school first, then you wouldnt be obligated to stay. -
I checked with the education office and found out they do pay for the school. Anything that is accredited up to $9000.00, that's not bad news at all. Thanks for the advice. I thought I was going to have to sign a commitment with a company, but this is much better. Thanks a heap!

I am enrolled in National Training out of Jacksonville. They are VA approved. Do it before you retire, at National Training if you are on terminal leave you get your room for free. Once you are fully retired then you pay for a room, at least a National Training.

I went through the swift school when I was trained. Swift let me go 8 months later. I got another job and made payments until the cost of the schooling was paid. I too signed a promissary note.

No, it doesn't make any sense.
It's a waste of your GI Bill benefits...why the hell would you blow them on trucking?
Especially at Werner......25 cpm start pay.
I started at .26 cpm 10 years ago.
If these were good jobs, there'd be a waiting list to hire-on with these companies.
Instead they can't keep the drivers they already have.
Why not?
Nothing but a last resort burn job...
