I know when I was 20-1 I recived many tickets that year I checked my driving record yesterday ive got 10 points however 7 of them will come off in the next 6 months.Ive never had a accident just speeding on the highway doing 83 in a 70 or 80 in a 70 and the big one 57 in a 35 ,I was on a road I didnt know and the speed limit was 55 i must of missed the 45 because when that 35 came up on me i was hauling and the cop he knew the area and knew where to get a good speed at.but them tickets had racked up points over the years. My dads been driving truck 23 years. He told me to get my CDL because ive lost my job have a wife and kid and NEED to survive. He told me just go ahead and get it I have no criminal history I passed the drug test and physical is it worth still getting or am I just wasting my time because the points.

Get it. Why not? Somebody, somewhere will hire you. Find something local and get some experience and wait for the points to drop off; show the larger OTR companies you have matured and aren't going to be a risk. The citrus season will be starting soon, maybe you can find a gig hauling oranges to start out. Perhaps your dad may have some hook-ups and can help you out. Best wishes.

What do you mean by 20-1 ?? I doubt you get a job . If you do you probably won't get enough miles to properly support your family . Even if you get a job another ticket or 2 will disqualify you . Few companies will take that risk .
How is the rest of your job history ? That is also a big factor .

I owned my own lawn care landscapeing but since the market fell off people have just been cutting there own grass doing things themselfs to save money and allot of guys are going out like this.

There are allot of companys hiring for 13 dollars an hour around here, anything would help right now.My dad owns his trucks he told me to get my permit and drive with him for a few weeks even if I cant get a job RIGHT NOW like he said it will always be there in the end.Can I still take the test my license have never been suspended and because ive never had 12 points in a year period never really came close its just the 2 in 06 that got me still. Will they turn me down as far as the speeding thats the only thing that ive done wrong.

Dr V you are right about the citus season they hire ANYONE.I dont care how much they pay me right now I just need something ive got to do what ive got to do to make it.I wish the poor choices 3 years ago I made I could change. In 3 years I got married had a son start my own business and all was well untill last month Ive learned allot.I was more like a kid then, but a family changes you makes you wish somethings you did before you could change.I just need to make things right.

Will I need to attend a driving school? Ive been able to (drive) a rig around the farm since i was 14 years old and was hauling gravel around in the 7 alex mack at 16.( we lived in the corn fields).

My pops he is old school so all these changes and regs and rules he sort of knows about but he didnt have to pass no test like they have now a days.

He says he can teach me how to drive but as far as WHAT they want you to know,He said I might want to look into school.Once I get my permit does that mean I can drive with my dads company with my dad and rack up some hours or does that mean I can go to school and drive?

THe issue won't be learning to drive the truck - it will be learning to use the logs, etc. Sounds like Dad is local only and doesn't do logs. Not a bad way to start, but somewher along the line you'll probably need to take a refresher (I think they run about $500) if you want to get on with a national company.

Personally, if Dad will hire you- even as a temp, I'd go with it. It's money. Who knows, you might end up in partnership or someting like that.

Any major company is going to want training from an approved school when starting out. Check with your school board, I know Polk County has adult courses for driving. Most community colleges do too. They are the cheapest way to go. If you can get your CDL with your dad's help for free, then go for it. Just look for something around here to get the experience. If I couldn't have come back to Roehl I was going to run citrus.

He does dump trucks in the summer hires a few drivers for the summer months for OTR runs to mass and NY VT new england he has some contract with them all year round who ever it is up there. Then in the winter when the gravel pits freeze up and mud up he goes over the road and keeps the logs.He was telling me about the logs last night. He keeps them in a binder
