I have sprint .. believe me, it happens. Always searching for signal. Heck, I could have 5 bars and still not load a web page, let alone make calls. Between that and sleeping and driving, there would be days in a row that my family and friends wouldn't heard from my Facebook addicted butt. I'm getting Verizon asap. Sprint is horrible as a trucker.

I made a deal with my family. I would text them an "all is well City, State" daily if they NEVER, EVER called me about ANYTHING they see on the news ESPECIALLY WEATHER. Some worried family members make no distinction between a snowstorm in Seattle and the driver being in Key West, FL. ANYTHING you see on TV is a huge exaggeration and often several days old.

Maybe your loved one has a cellphone plan that limits texts, or minutes or data. Work out some mutual plan on communication. If his phone is broken, he is certainly using his trainer's phone for something. A text is a reasonable request.
MOST drivers find the period they spend riding with their trainer at the first company to be about the hardest period in trucking. It may be hard to sleep in a moving truck, you have no space for your stuff. No control over your schedule. May have to eat and use the bathroom on someone else's schedule, plus learn an alien job.

If you have cell service from Verizon there are few places you will be out of touch for days that you can operate a semi truck. ATT is almost as good, everyone else gives good-ish service on the interstate highways. Verizon has several companies that bulk buy minutes and data from Verizon and provide Verizon-like cell coverage at lower prices than Verizon. If you drive 48 states you need to be using the Verizon network. Otherwise, you are choosing how much hassle you have getting service, not whether you have hassle getting service. No matter which service you use that are some remote areas of the West with no cell coverage.
