To me it looks like criminal background checks are going away... eventually.

According to this article, several States have already done so:

I can see you are trying to be honest. So I will be honest with you. You are not a good candidate to be a driver. You have a double whammy working against you. The two worst felonies for a truck driver are theft and DUI. I am being serious when I say you would have a better chance of becoming a truck driver if you'd been convicted of kidnapping, murder, spousal abuse, etc. You are too much of a liability for insurance companies. You have a history of theft so you cannot be trusted with expensive freight. And it doesn't matter how honest of a person you are now. Insurance companies do not care about the kind of person you are now. They care about your recorded past. In addition to that you have a history of drunk driving. Even if you're a teetotaler now if you have a drunk driving accident while you were driving your truck it would cost the insurance company 10 times what it otherwise would have if you had never had a DUI in the past. Lawyers would have a field day with any company that hired you and the insurance company that insures them. If it was just one or the other then I would tell you maybe it's a possibility if it was was a long time ago. But both of them together makes it nearly impossible. I know what I'm talking about because I own a trucking company. My insurance company made it very clear the type of people I can hire and they will insure. The key factor seem to be multiple problems rather than just a single problem. Like the other posters said, just apply see what happens. But do not hold your breath. I would be shocked if anyone was able to hire you and get you cleared through their insurance company. I also have a Masters degree in vocational rehabilitation counseling. I used to help people like you find jobs. I was never able to find someone like you a job driving a truck. My advice to you is to go to a vocational school and learn a trade such as welding. You will make more money, be home every night, and it is a skill that is needed all over the country. Any job like this would be a good fit for you. And your past wouldn't matter as long as you have the skill set the employer was looking for. Good luck to you and I hope you continue to keep your life straight.

I will start by saying that I believe that there are company owners out here that would sell their soul to Satan to keep the seats filled in their trucks from now until they pass on.

Now that being said, I am curious if you were told by someone that you could still be hired with this kind of record? I am wondering how you came to the conclusion that trucking might be your answer.

Lastly, I would ask if YOU were a risk retention manager would you put someone in charge of your customer's merchandise who had already stolen twice? Of if you were a safety director would you hire someone to operate a commercial vehicle who has exhibited that they will drive while drunk?

I am sure a driver training school would be happy to take your money with no guarantees of a job at the end.

In answer to your question yes, you can get a job driving a truck. don't let these Yahoo's tell you different I have three felonies one of them drugs on it, and I did find a job driving a truck. yes it was hard and yes I got turned down a lot but I was persistent. i've had guys tell me on here for months that there was no way I would ever find a company that would hire me and I refused to believe that and so yes I did find the companythat would. if you search the threads you're going to find a list of companies that will hire you with a felony you have to do your research and you have to look and call a lot of company's but it is possible if you want it bad enough.

Apparently this risk retention manager isn't too worried about it... Craigslist may not be the most reputable place to seek employment, but this job looks legit:

I can see what you are saying as it relates to a general freight company, but I think construction and oil field is different. Especially with a driver shortage in the area.

And what I have been reading about Texas oil field jobs is, even when experience is "required", if you can show up to the yard for an interview with CDL in hand, that is often enough experience. The OP could be making more money 30 days from now in the trucking industry then many of the mega-company drivers with a few years experience are making!

Yes, attend CDL school. Don't worry, you will be hired. Put your location on your profile so we know the hiring area you're in.

I am just curious if any of those felonies you were convicted for were driving under the influence or theft? It is a well-known fact you can get a job as a truck driver with a prior felony. But it depends greatly on what the felony was. Like I said in my other post, I was able to find a truck driving job for a guy who had committed murder. But I was never able to find a truck driving job for someone who was convicted of theft. I always thought it was crazy that insurance companies were willing to take a chance on someone who has a history of willingness to drive while drunk. But they do not want to take a chance on someone who has a history of willingness to steal.

Nobody likes a thief. Murderers are OK, as long as they only kill people I don't like, but thieves should be shot, not put in a truck.

I just had a wonderful thought. I want to start a trucking company, that specializes in getting Murderers back on the right track. They would be given a chance to redeem themselves with society.

To be hired by my company, a murderer would have to kill 3 thieves for every felony they were convicted of, to be considered for hire. Heck, it's not like I would be asking them to do something they had never done before.

Not necessarily. Schools don't give a rat's backside whether you will get hired or not. They just want students in their schools.
