It's pretty cheap to live in VA where are you out of?
-
Do you see the miles at the pay I described passing the hourly pay w/ overtime included?
-
Maryland. At those wages I was tight covering car loan/rent/bills/student loan and daily living.

In the mpls area, 17 to 18 is standard box truck pay. Class A local tops out around 27 bucks a hour.
-
Not sure what cost of living is like there but my brother lives in north va and his rent is almost double mine to give you an idea

I glanced through posts and don't see where you list how many miles you're expected to get as a mileage driver. Maybe I missed it?
At 17/hr I was taking home 954 every two weeks. 1908/month. That was just me on benefits and all the SS etc.
You're single, no kids/child support. You could probably do ok on that hourly wage if you don't have loans.
But if you're single with no loans and no hooks, why not go out and make more now while you can? Just a thought.

After reading more.
As you would be with a contractor in the hourly job, I'd say take the other. Personally I'd never do a contract gig. But again, I have more to think about then just myself. That may change things.

Maryland rents apartments like 1500 and houses over 2000.
Some people purchase mobile homes. And the lucky few simply plunk down half a million for a howard county house only to discover annual property taxes due in excess of 10,000.
My father rented a nice apartment for 200 in late 70's houses were 20,000 retails as were muscle cars with V8 and air at 4000 to 6000 all done. Dollar bills was silver certs not based on Federal Reserves at all until later.
We moved into our first house that was close to 80K with close to a 700 (Edited. DOH!!!) monthly payment in a land of 20% interest rates on a mortgage in the 80's Just to make sure we got out of the crumbling and failing Baltimore. Today that house is classed at three or four times value with property taxes to match. Ugh.
Here in Arkansas rent is 30% of whatever your income is flat. Also City Government has a rule that for Police etc Rents are no more than 25% total income each month. (And they provide whatever it is necessary to make it 25% cost to the Lawman or Fireman etc. whom are good neighbors) If you are in the private market, a one bedroom is a flat 1000 plus. Houses start at 1200 on up That is for renting.
We bought a three bedroom for 35K, an old Jim Walker Home (Built on site not a ... motor or manufactored home) and was built over engineered and over code everywhere. We sold it 15 years later for almost 50K flat. It did recieve over 70K in replacement, rebuilds, improvements etc etc etc far beyond it's retail value. But you can bet the nice little old lady living there now is living quietly without fear of crappy house falling down around her.
Trucking with a proper sleeper cab? Two expenses. Tickets and Food. Everything else? ZIP. NOTHING. Housing? Ha. Taken care of.
I almost bought 160 acres in WVa and again in Texas. Those people sure can talk. Maybe I should have bought. Then what do I build on it? Hmm?
Maybe someday I will buy that land and freaking build on it.
