Got my truck back up and going and I have a few options in front of me to choose from . Both are totally different , but they are both % pay which I think ( personally ) is better than mileage . I am going to lay them out and see what the general thought is on here . Keeping in mind I do have a truck that could do either position easily so equipment is not a factor to weigh on the decision .
Options :
1. Van Freight
75% of 100
100% of FSG ( mileage based currently 0.39-0.41 ) loaded only .
Trailer rental fee $ 150.00 ( weekly ) its not a maint lease they maintain trailer .
Rates - I'm told are 1.55-2.10 gross ( plus fuel listed above )
weight - I'm told 10k to 30k
No other fees
2. Tanker
64% of 100%
100% FSG ( based on % of toral LH normally 28-32%) this would equate to around 0.50 to 0.59 currently per mile loaded
Rates - I'm told 2.05 to 2.35
weight 44k - 45k
no other fees
heres my thoughts . It looks as if its a no brainier and the tank contract is more revenue per mile . But when you factor in the Tank Wash and down time associated with that is it really ? The second thought is the weight and tear on equipment . I'm not sure as to how to place a value on the down time of sitting at a Tank Wash for FREE for a avg of 0.75 to 1.0 days between loads ( just a rough avg ) I know sometimes you can do this quicker . Both are % pay so deadhead is free so it's a wash on that end . The other factor I have is on the VAN side the trailer rental equates to 600.00 a month . However with the higher % it equates to around 3-5% of gross rev . Which still puts me at 5-6% above the tank rate of 64% . Then you factor in the LH difference Tank rates tend to be higher than VAN so is the 6% net gain after you take the trailer rental out if the equation enough to justify Van over Tank or Vice Versa . Tank does pay accessory pay and detention . The van would be a semi dedicated account and tank would be normal OTR . Both have roughly same fuel discounts of roughly 0.10 .
Pay turn around -
tank - 10-14 days hold . So you get paid for what you did 10-14 days ago weekly )
van - 2-3 days -Turn in by Tuesday get that Friday )
If I can think of anything else ill add it here . I left company names out cause I want the deals looked at over the company names .

Since the rates on the tank deal are so low it must be food grade and not hazmat, I wouldn't think it would be worth it. I would lean toward the van deal, but only if it where at a place like F2F or LS.

TANK - it would be general chemical mostly non - haz . Some hazmat I'm sure but rates are pros balky not much higher I'm assuming cause the averages I placed on here were normal averages I was given .
On the VAN - would not be a deal like F2F or LS . I'd be planned weekly a week ahead and it's normally 95% drop and hook mainly inter company dedicated freight transfers . and they say weekly home time
avg gross of around 3200-3500 on 2300-2500 miles ( rough numbers ) they said avg would be around 1.55-1.65 a running mile possibly slightly more but not much . -

I am not sure what tank company you are looking at but I will give you some facts.
Mike3fan who posts on here had a thread on another board where he posted his revenue and miles for over one full year. He ran system for Dana and came home roughly every other weekend. His revenue was about 1.85 to 1.90 for all miles.
I was a local owner op with Superior Carriers in one of the less busy terminals. My last year I did 2.04 per mile on seventy thousand miles. It was pretty much all dedicated work for me so half of those miles were empty.
Most of the tank companies are going to have you drop and hook at tank washes. I can count on one hand the amount of live washes I had in five years with Superior. None of those live washes ever took more than about three or four hours but I am sure longer can happen if the tank wash is busy.
We had guys in our terminal at Superior that had a dedicated dry bulk deal and they were making outrageous money. Unfortunately for me, even though I had a blower I only got in that plant a few times a month.
I will say that I am back to van because of my personal situation. I had twins last year and I needed to get closer to home. I was living at the Superior terminal during the week and coming home on the weekends. That won't work for me now so I now have a deal much closer to home. If I lived close to the terminal I would still be there.
Pulling a tank will not damage your truck. You learn quickly enough how to control the load and won't beat up your driveline. Yes the loaded weights are always going to be much higher but the truck is designed to pull it. I managed 6.5 MPG lifetime pulling a tank. I had a Western Star with a CAT.
I will agree with an earlier post, if your tank choice is Quality Carriers take the van job. If you can get with Superior, Dana, Heniff, or any of the better companies then you will make more with tanks.US MARINE Thanks this. -
