The truck that's leased on only needs bobtail insurance. It doesn't need a DOT number. The truck under your Authority will need all required insurance dot and mc#. That's it.

But the previous insurance carrier might require proof of lease [a copy of that unit's lease with the other carrier/DOT number] and agree to report any changes.

Once again, having a good independent insurance broker makes this sort of stuff easier...MUCH easier!

A few years ago our lease operators were required to give a DOT number to the state at renewal. Those without their own number needed to give the number of the carrier they were leased with. We had close to 100 port trucks in their individual LLC names as owner BUT
a new area appeared on the registration form showing the DOT number responsible for safety as our company and DOT number.

As guys change carriers, a lot don't change the registration until renewal and Inspectors will review the driver info at the door that displays the correct info but after sitting in the car with the registration, assign the report to the incorrect carrier which usually is not appreciated by the former carrier.

Our benefit was that the handful of leased operators that did have their own DOT number meant their inspection record went on their own SMS report and not ours!

WoW, found the question first try. This is exactly what I want to do, have 3 trucks leased to the current carrier I am leased to and get my own authority for my COE only. Wasn't sure how the Ins. would go but now I have an idea. Kool.
