The problem with some people, they like poking a snake with a stick. Rather than letting it crawl away on it's own.

While not me myself. My sister is on disability. This is a combination of her insurance (purchased at work) and SSI. She has terminal cancer.

This topic was discussed in a post within this forum about a month ago.

She currently draws in excess of $3000 a month. Her medical care is provided through her work place insurance, which is continuing even though she isn't working. She still pays her premiums...not through Cobra.

Her work place insurance would have paid her the entire amount (3k+ a month) until age 65, had the SSI not kicked in. And it did for 3 months, now the insurance merely fills the gap..

In addition to this monthly income. She has a Roth IRA, along with other savings.

Once SHE is gone. The remaining insurance and the retirement accounts, will provide for our mother.

Once my mother is gone. The "trust" set up by my sister (who has no children) becomes the property of my son. Insuring he has a place to live, once he graduates from college. If he wants.

While I understand your situation is different. Your ability to plan for the unforeseen future...remains the same.

She SOLD her new truck within 60 days of diagnosis. Her camper was destroyed in the recent tornadoes...so insurance paid it off. Before she could sell.

If either of you, yourself or my sister, have a reason to whine. The only one I have heard so far....is you.

I know many that milked the unemployment extensions over two years. Why I say milked? Because they were content with the checks and never looked for a job. Sure the country is hurting. Unemployment went from 7% to 10%. A whopping 3% increase. Yet everyone uses that as an excuse there is no job. Mysteriously 3% means the rest of the jobs are gone.

Pick up any big town newspaper and there are 6 pages of jobs. Many people are just overly selective. There are jobs. It might not be one you like, but there are jobs. They don't pay enough? Work two jobs. There's always the military. They hire everyday. Look on CareerBuilder.com, Monster.com, USA.gov. Thousands of jobs listed.

I do think work'n for walmart for 750 an hr as an adult is a waist of my time tho, and honestly if u think ppl should work for an unlivable wage then u go do it.

    This could be the problem.

Maybe we need a depression to reprogram your thinking. Men traveled from all over the country and stood in line 2 weeks waiting for someone to fall so they could get a job at the Hoover Dam.

You don't have a clue how good you have it. Rely on them hand outs.

When I was younger, I worked two minimum wage jobs like many. Didn't hurt me one bit. It kept me out of trouble and gave me good work morals.

Yes, there are jobs listed in the papers. I see them too. If it's a driving job, usually the rate is quite low and the same people blasting the O/P would be offended by the offer. Or, the equipment is junk. Or, you are expected to run illegal. I see posters get flamed all the time for remaining at such companies. Heck, I've been flamed for remaining with the company I'm leased to.

Many of the listed jobs want you to have "x" number of years' experience. Or a degree.

Apply for entry level, minimum wage positions and you are overqualified.

Or, you are perfectly qualified, but if you get hired, that means the guy's nephew won't get the job. (I saw a post somewhere back wherein someone thinks they are a shoo-in for a good union job because Daddy works there.)

I have collected unemployment for a sum total of four months in 25 years of working and living on my own. But that's me. I know someone who is perfectly capable of working and who is willing to do jobs "nobody else wants" like washing dishes at a restaurant. But nobody will touch him because he is 68 years old. (Walmart greeter is probably not in his cards.)

To make a blanket statement is not fair to the O/P. He came on here looking for ideas to get into the trucking business and has been thoroughly flamed for his effort. He's doing his research, as so many advise on these very boards, yet gets blasted for following through on a suggestion from an experienced member...when he reports back what his results were with understandable frustration.

Several members have gotten their CDLs through WIA and other programs. They were congratulated for doing so. Now this guy gets kicked in the teeth for trying to follow their example.

He's trying to get back to work so he can support his family. I would think we would encourage him to do so.

Or would you guys rather discourage him to a point that he gives up, loses his house, goes on welfare and really lives off your taxes?

To the O/P: Yes, I know you don't want to go through company training. But you are kind of running out of options. Having a CDL does not guarantee you a job. Even most private schools want you to have several prehires before they will run you through. Whatever way you go, you will most likely have a student loan to pay off. The difference is, with company sponsored training, the loan is taken directly from your pay. With a private school loan, that $37.50/week crosses your hand before being passed on to the lender. Of course, it's a lot easier to skip out on something not taken directly from your pay, but you're not the type to do that .....are ya?
