    My friend is looking at expanding his fleet if he found the right truck and would like to know some basic information about them. Would an 03-05 equip with CAT engine be good or would a detroit be better. Cummins are out of the question as despises them. Also, is their any external rigging in order to add more gauges or is the wiring already there?

    i run a 06 columbia with acert cat. this is not a company driver engine. will not return decent mpg with foot on floor. early egr DD had some problems but DD knows how to correct this now. better mpg and lower operating cost with DD engines in fleet operations. just my opinion

    First what kinda operation is he running and around which area. Those can change things a lot, also we need more specs on the truck. Just the make, model, and engine spec you can't make a determination. You have to look at the big picture.

    mainly he runs florida to new york to texas runs. however; depending on where his new driver wants to run, this could change. for example, a truck hes looking at has: 3.70 ratio, full fairings, 10spd, and 540K with a cat c15.

    Also, he only buys 10spd transmissions with o/d. In another thread, i heard from a member from down under that a 6nz cat motor will be good. Will a 03-05 columbia have that?

    6nz would be in 03 models built before 10/1/02. then bridge engine til early 04, then acert

    I would say if he wants power then he should go for the Cat, and if he wants good fuel millage he should go for Detroit, but all in all Cat mite be the one that needs an overhaul last, Cats a reliable and strong engine, On Detroit it usually gets started at the head and moves its way around, but if you drive them both properly they both are equally the same, it all depends on the driver.
    Theres a company down here in Quebec who does Quebec to California, they have brand new Peterbilt 387's and under the hood they got 380hp Cat engines, they pull full loads and go up those big hills.
