Hello fellas,
Looking for some advice. We lost a cam in one of our peterbuilts and were curious. Has anyone swapped a detroit of a 3406 in a 05 or newer peterbuilt? The electronics is an issues but I've heard of a company that does a complete wiring harness for swaps? Any info would be great..
Thanks

There is a web site called www.kustom-products.com/ but their website is down. You'll be more pleased with the Detroit, just get a pre-EGR unit.

From the Kustom website:
3. Kustom Harness Products:
For the operator or company, who wants to upgrade their current mechanical or early electronic engines and transmissions. Our harness conversion products offer engine control wire harnesses and transmission control harnesses to allow the installation of any electronic Cat engine, Cummins engine, or Detroit engine into your chassis. We also offer Allison and automated Eaton Fuller transmission conversion harnesses. If you are an OEM, body or equipment builder, or have a marine application that needs a custom designed harness package and engine/monitoring dash panel call us for a quote.
As I read it, this is to UPDATE, not BACKDATE the engine in a truck. If you do a backdate, be prepared for a fair amount of work/wiring/engineering/fabrication. -
Depends on what year 3406, whether the ecm has the same number of pins. If not there are sources (other than Kustom) for wiring harnesses. My ex co. has replaced 2 C13's withC15's. I used to remember more about this but buying a Detroit fogs your brain.
UPDATE!

I talked to the mechanic that did the two swaps at my former co. today. The 2007 EXH was a drop in. The 2003 short hood needed a different fan hub before the radiator and hood would fit properly. (The C15 that went in it came from a Western Star) He says as long as it's a 70 pin ecm it should be plug & play. The last year or two of the 3406 (2WS?) used a 70 pin ecm, so the OP should be able to do what he is proposing, at least with a 3406.
FWIW when I was in Kentucky a few months ag buying my truck I was talking to a mechanic at the dealers & he claimed he could make any engine work in any truck. He said he charges $1,000 for the wiring & does it in one day. He claimed he had a nice little side biz going doing it.Shanerz379 Thanks this. -
I did forget to mention that it was a short hood! But thank you... I will start looking for a 3406 (my favorite motor anyways). What year 3496 should I look for? TIA

DOes anyone know the length of a 3406?

I'm curious why you don't rebuild or replace the C13? I have a 2004 with a C13 and it's a good truck.
