Ok so I have only been in trucking for about 3 years so I'm not up to speed about older Volvo's in general since I have mainly driven FL's and Pete's.

I have been looking into purchasing a truck and came across this truck today. It's a 2005 VNL630 with a D12 and Eaton Fuller "lightning" transmission, about 710k miles on it. I have never seen one of these transmissions before. (I'm guessing there is a reason I haven't seen many of them out there.) From what I've read they were discontinued correct? They are asking $31,000 for it.

I'll be haling SE regional refer with it. It looks like it was setup previously for tanker.

I haven't dug in too deep yet on any of the trucks I have looked at just seeing what's out there right now...so I don't know what (if any) major service has been done to it yet. Obviously I will ask for a report on any truck before making a decision but wanted to ask and see what others think about this.

The tranny ia a POS. No kidding, RUN!

Eaton ceased production after 9 months , no kidding. total POS made out of aluminum to save weight and computer controlled . In Freightliner hooked to a Detroit it can't be separated from the engine as the 2 ecm's speak to each other , prolly the same in Volvo.

Guy at work has one, spent a month at Freightliner while they tried to figure out whats wrong. ( had no high side ) Ended up need a new computer.

    JMO, good luck....

The lightning was designed as a lightweight version of the supper 10. It didnt work in heavy application. it wasn't bad for lightweight strait trucks and such, but with 80,000 pounds it wasn't really tough enough.

Personaly i wouldn't spend 31k on a truck with 700 k on it. I spent 20k on mine with 680k on it. It also came with a 13, not a lightning.
