I am looking at a 2006 Western Star Dump Truck with a 525 hp Detroit. What are your opinions on this engine? Will this motor lug? I have a 2004 Mack that falls flat on its face under 1300 RPM. TIA

Which Detroit? The new turbocompound DD15 or the 14l Series 60? I have no experience with the DD15, but every other Detroit I've driven isn't too impressive below 1300 rpm. They're revving motors not lugging motors.
Sounds like you really want a Cat, if you want sub-1300 rpm stomp. -

The only motors that I know of that the manufacture says to lug down that far is a CAT. All the rest say that the cruising speed is around 1350-1400. Now this is flat ground cruising speed...hit any little hill and you got to drop a gear. If you are looking for sub-1300 rpm then go with a CAT as WCP said. But be ready to spend money on aftermarket parts, fuel, and at rebuild time (which will be later in life with certain aftermarket parts installed).

there are options to get more power out of it if you want to keep the mack for both the ASSET AND AI, have seen guys update the software and make a big diffrence, if you want to keep it but low end torque and Detroit never have gone together probley never will

CAT is the only engine manufacturer that wants it's cores......
Nothing goes to waste.....nothing tossed out according to my mech.....
Hell, even Detroits are getting up there in the rebuild dept though...... -
Where do I find someone to reprogram? Mack will not fix it.

Hi DJ: There is PDI in Utah. I have no personal experience with them, but many people on these forums speak very well of them. From what i understand, they will program whatever you want into your ECM. Best of luck. It is alot of work driving a truck not built to do what you need.
