I have a 2006 9400 I with a 435 Cummins ISX. Between RPMs of 1400 and 1650 the engine has a noise that is a mix of a knocking and popping sound during acceleration only. It is slightly worse under a load.
There is no loss of power. I have changed the oil, oil filter and fuel filter also searched for any leaks in the exhaust system.
The only other thing that may be related is the truck is only getting 4.75 miles per gallon.
This is a new truck to me that I have only put 8K miles on. It was part of a package deal with two other good running trucks. Overall the truck has plenty of power and runs great other than the knocking noise and poor fuel mileage. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you in advance.

Maybe a inj. is over fueling, that can make popping plus bad fuel mi. like that, have oil anl. done that can find fuel in the oil some co. cant find fuel in oil because of new fuel?

Would pulling the injectors at a idle be able to find a bad one if it is over fueling?

If you get a heat gun and pull over after a hard pull after its been acting up to see what ex. man. cil. is way hoter than the others, a real inj. rebuild shop will put a jar under the inj. and find the one thats filling the test cup faster?

    Jamesnuzzo1 and Heavyd Thank this.

Okay, I'll get it heat on and try that out first. I'm on a tight budget for this truck until my motor rebuild is done on my Detroit so I'm trying my best to self-diagnose

    baha Thanks this.

What engine CM 871, they make a tool to mount on timing actuator to see which one is leaking, 870 the same way. Go to Cummins quick serve and register then you can download procedure, I just changed 5&6. Tool is 150.00 bucks.
Quick test is pull return line off place in bucket, and if returns or bubbling, then you will need to get tool to isolate which injector is leaking.

I used heat gun also but it gave bad info buy the time I got stopped and raised hood.
5 leaking, 4 just bad, heat gun said 3 was the one.
