I have a 2006 freightliner columbia w/a 14L detroit. Im having problems with the fuel filter, Im only getting, if Im lucky, about 8000-9000 miles out of a filter. When it needs changed, it acts like its starving for fuel in the top end of the top three gears (8-9-10) no power, no acceleration. The fuel level in the cansiter is full, which tells me that the filter is plugged and not allowing the fuel to travel through the system. When I replace the filter, the fuel level will continue to rise till its full. Once it full, it continues to run fine, then it will start slowly, then finally start starving for fuel. The last time it was full, I ran it at least another 2k miles before it acted up.
This was a Ryder truck, Ive heard that Ryder and Penske both experimented with a bio diesel. I understand that bacteria grows easier in bio diesel than ultra low sulfer diesel. I do not and never have ran bio diesel. I do have some black material in the bottom of the tank, but nothing floating in the tank. I took the last filter apart, the element was black, I mean black. It was oily, not sticky. Ive been told if I do have a bacteria, it would look like black snot. I would not take it as black snot, never the less, I have been treating the fuel with a bio blast, used to treat a bacteria.
A mechanic told me if I still have problems, might need to rebuild the bottom of the fuel filter cansiter or change to a spin on system.
Also, Ive noticed the mpg going down, when all is good, I see mpg readings as high a 8mpg. When the filter is full only about 5 of 5.5 mpg.
I would like to get to the point where I change the filter at each service (12000 - 15000 mi) or more. Not having to change it in between services along the road.
I used to work of an LTL company and if I remember correctly, those fuel filters werent changed before about 20 or 25k.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks !!!!!!! Be safe out there !!!!!!

looks like dirty tank
Is the return fuel black?
Any deposits on bottom of tank? -
The fact that you repeatedly have black crud in the filters when they plug means you have too much or are still breeding it. At the very least you should do some serious biocide treatments, and possible need to have your tanks completely drained and cleaned. Without cleaning the bottoms you may just keep growing it, or stirring it up enough to plug the filters.
Yes biodiesel allows the growth of this crud, but low sulfur is also more susceptible to it than the old diesel. And many states have a percentage of biodiesel mandated, anywhere from 1 or 2% up to 10 or 20. -
Black crud) what a nice word)))) LOL
really it is the problem of bio fuel. I'd remove tanks, whash them with hot water and after that fill with water and heat to let water boil -
bysyth will kill the crud, i think thats how you spell it, any truck parts store will have it. however you will continue to have this problem for sometime, it took me about 4 or 5 filters before it was all gone. you could flush the tanks if you wanted too. the problem gets really bad when the truck just sits around like at ryder. if i remember the stuff has a silver color to it in the filter and looks like small black gobs in the tank.

bysyth -- what's that? kinda antybiotics?
-
Biocide. It's for killing the bacterial growth in diesel fuel.

ouh, one advice. Every winter I add jet fuel in tanks (not more 15%) to avoid gel. and jet fuel washes out all stuff. pilots say there is biocide there.
-
that's a new one....
Jet fuel is dang near kerosene. It's got little to no lubricating properties for your injectors or pump. -
yep, I know, that's why not more 15%. may be becouse I operate my truck in Russia I have to be ready to extra low temperatures
serozhah Thanks this.
