Good day everyone,
In my 2007 Volvo with D16 With Eaton Ultrashift trans. I just had a local shop dropped the trans and replaced both rear motor mounts. Upon completion I bobtail about 150 miles to the house with no issues. Took a 10,000 lbs load out and everything was fine, however on the return reload was 44,000 lbs and every time I’m climbing a hill the truck start violently jerking and feels like almost unnoticeable quickly cutting out. Whenever it does I watched the RPM gauge but don’t see any movement but I start loosing power. The truck fires right up with no long cranking so I’m not suspecting injectors or cups. I have check all the trans wiring and all seems intact, even unplugged the sensor harnesses and plugged them back just to be sure. I checked fuses and wire on batteries all good there. My batteries are fairly new and dash show it’s charging 14.1 vts.
There’s wasn’t a problem before the trans was dropped.
Any suggestions where I should look?

Check your ground wires, starter to battery wires, wires to ECM.
Something was moved when they dropped the trans out.
Could also be a short in the engine harness that was caused when they had to move wires out of the way.
The newer post-emission trucks run at a higher temperature which makes engine harness and sensor wiring very brittle. -

I checked the wiring and harness again today and nothing seems to be out of place. I will replace the wiring anyway and go from there when I get home because it still has the original. Seems to do it more on cruise control. Also notice while descending down hill on cruise it’s jerking and jolting only on cruise. Any ideas?

Here’s an update to my problem. It was the engine speed sensor. I replaced both speed sensors and I’m a happy man. This baby is running smoother than ever. Long before I had the work done which developed this bad jerking going uphill, there was another problem when decending from a hill with cruise control engaged, every now and again I feel the truck slightly jotting and if I tap the gas pedal it will stop jotting, that is gone too.
Just elaborate to let everyone know how I discovered the issue Incase someone experiences same issue. After checking all wiring, grounds and harnesses with no vail I decided to pull injectors and check the cups. They were all good however since I was that deep in it I pulled the cups and install new ones and new o rings on injectors, adjusted valves and all that. Went back out the problem did not go away. Made a trip and back home again, this time I remove the speed sensor on the output of the transmission which I had replaced about six months ago, it looked good so I installed it back. Got back out for another trip, about 200 miles down the road an error code for timing, crank sensor popped up and sure enough when I got back home and replace them, it’s been about two weeks now and absolutely zero jerking or jotting. The speed sensor on the right corner of engine by timing cover was a piece of cake easy to replace, however the one on the flywheel housing towards the left corner of the engine was a pain in the rear because of the steel pipes running behind the engine, and that sensor was covered with debri when I removed it.
I hope this helps someone who may develop such a problem. Happy trails fellas!DUNE-T, Goodysnap and daf105paccar Thank this. -
Same thing happen to my truck. It was the speed sensor. Thanks for updating post.

I know this is an old thread but how is your D16/18SP ultrashift combo treating you? have you had any major issues with the engine or transmission?is it a DEF truck ? I know that D16 is a dangerous endeavor but while I was looking for a D13 or D12 with a 13 speed manual I came across a 2007 VNL780 D16 535HP 18 speed ultrashift no DEF with 617k ODO/ECM miles and 3.42 rears for sale close to my house at Arrow truck sales, seems overkill for my application (keeping it below 80k mixed terrain) but the price is very tempting, now I know the resale value of these is garbage and Arrow is your typical shady dealer but at 19k, if I can shave off a few thousands from the price and the truck turns out to be a not too bad of a deal, I'll not worry about the resale value cuz I'll run the thing to the ground, (or maybe I'll be the one who gets run into the ground) but at 617k miles for a 2007 I suspect that this truck spent more time in the shop than out on the road.
