Cutoffs ain't too expensive. I paid $1250 CAD for a single 20k lb axle on Airliner.
Heck give a few wreckers a shout, they might be able to take the rails from a cutoff they have laying around and just graft a pair of better rails in there.szilszon1 Thanks this. -

KW quoted me $18k CAD for a pair of undrilled rails for a project. I had a local metal fab shop with a large break bend me up a pair that were long enough to run from the back of the cab (where I had good frame) to the back. I drilled everything myself. Total cost for the rails plus the sleeves was under $2k CAD if I remember it right. I prepped everything and a welder came out to glue it all together. Only took him an afternoon.

I was speaking about this option with the mechanics where my truck is now.
It s a regular place.Rebuilding engines and all kind of stuff and i know them well,but they are not experts in this i believe
I'm no mechanic or welder in any way shape or form but what i don't understand if you cut the rails right behind the cab
then weld another rail on it...
How on earth can that be perfectly aligned ,straight ,exactly same position if done by a regular welder/mechanic
I mean i'm not saying cannot be done ,lots of trucks are stretched by professionals
Lasers and sophisticated stuff are not needed to do this kind of job? just asking...W923 Thanks this. -

They usually sleeve bolt an inner channel at the splice itself, since mostly what you need is some twist resistance (depending on engine power) and then everything is mostly just in compression/tension, that is pretty easy to acheive, easiest (best?) spot is behind the sleeper where there isnt usually much but steps or apu anyway.Cattleman84 and szilszon1 Thank this.
