Hello, I'm looking for input about my 2008 Cummins ISX installed in my Kenworth T660 big sleeper truck.
Overhead was performed today and the dealership told me I needed to have both cams replaced due to scoring on the lobes: see pics. The scoring in the pics don't look that bad, but I'm not an engine mechanic....Any input would be appreciated. Engine was overhauled once, around 500K since then. Cams were both replaced with the original OH..so these have around 500K. I change my oil every 10K and use rotella, same oil used since brand new. Total miles are 1.1 Million.

    Thank you in advance.

    Robert

In our fleet we have a good amount of 07 ISXs in them, and this is something that we have seen a few times. I've seen it get much worse and still get ran, but obviously its not going to get better. You'll end up needing to replace them, but you have a little time. Its important that you don't just throw in the cams and call it a day, you'll want to make sure who ever does it disassembles the rocker assemblies and make sure the oil passages are clear in the rockers and shafts. Especially where the cam has worn under. And you will more than likely need to change the rocker arms that ride on the worn lobes.

Lots of life left there. That wear won't go away, but I don't think replacement is needed yet.

I'd pull the cover & check in another 100k. Maybe check the overhead again. That wear certainly isn't cause for replacement. When they fail the greatest wear occurs at the highest point of the lobe & wears the roller as well. After that the whole lobe gets heavily pitted. You shouldn't lose any sleep over what those pictures show.

I'd say you've got a fair amount time left. At least you know that it will be an issue in the future and you can plan ahead to have it done.

Eventually it will most likely turn into this. Believe it or not we had a service manager that had a tech run an overhead on this and put it back on the road. Just goes to show you what these things can handle. You have a long way to go before it turns into anything like this. Just keep an eye on it.

Start saving money and start doing oil samples. You will see iron ramp up fast when it starts to go, it may last a few years yet, then again, it may not, so keep an eye on it.

Yep, like triple wrench said, they actually run great when there is a tremendous amount of cam damage. We have seen the same level of damage on engines that sounded just fine. Fuel mileage was off a bit and that is why they wanted the top end set done, then we found the damage. Like GrapeApe said, just start saving up some money. I would pop the rocker cover off in 4-6 months to see how it is progressing and re-evaluate then.

I drove mine for at least 30k miles after the #5 intake lobe started going flat. Couldn't tell the diffrence in performance or fuel mileage. Heard a little ticking if I let off the throttle is all. I just replaced the engine with a Cummins ReCon and runs exactly the same with same fuel mileage as the engine I took out at 800k miles with the flat lobe. Just no ticking when I let off the throttle and no more oil usage.
