This problem has happened before but usually goes away soon after so it makes diagnosing a challenge but this time it seems here to stay. Every few months the gauges will quit working. The gauges will do the sweep at start but after that the oil, water, tach, and speedo will not read. The air and fuel do but I suspect it is because air and fuel gauge are mechanical with no input to ecm . Also the cluster is not the problem as I switched it with another sterling and that cluster acted the same.
I suspect this is a common issue as a google search shows many of the same problems however very few solutions. I have checked fuses they are good. I also checked resistance of the green and yellow wire at the data plug and got 60 ohms which from what I read is desired. Any diagnosing help or common failures to check is appreciated.

Check and redo grounds. Do not use dielectric grease, which you may find in plugs or the grounds. If so, clean off with solvent. All connector plugs shoot some Deoxit and put together/pull apart a few times.
If it isn't the panel, where's the other end of the connectors to it?Big_D409 Thanks this. -
Does it have a Mercedes benz engine in it?

Under your dash, middle, above engine dog house cover you will see a black box about 8" x 4" 3 or 4 wired plugs going into it. The box will dismount without ant tools. Unplug all of the plugs and look for any loose wire pins. Plug back in and try. Sometimes that's all it takes. This box is called VECU. It is what a Sterling or Freightliner cab must use to communicate to a Benz or DD13/15 engine. They don't go bad often. expensive and have to be programmed. Readily available on EBay.

Thanks for the replies we will have to try this on Monday and see if it can be corrected.

Here is the update. I tried the vecu in a twin sterling exact same engine, trans, driveline, year and it was fine. I decided to take a break and start diagnosing a abs code and found j1939 abs fault shorted or open. I thought this was suspicious. I checked the meritor abs ecm and found the aluminum housing to be very corroded and porus. My theory at that point was moisture in the abs ecm was causing a circuit problem in the green and yellow j1939 wires and causing issues in cluster through the same circuit. After replacing abs ecm the cluster started working. I am not going to garentee that was the problem but I am very hopefull.

Had this issue happen to one of our 2005 LT9500 series sterlings found by the clutch pedal where the orange and green wire plug into the locking tab was broke. Repositioned it in different socket on the firewall and works fine now
