Truck will start perfect and run but after reaching operating temperature it stalls out. Then I can’t get it start back up again. Have replaced the fuel shut off valve and cleaned all powers and grounds as well as checking mega fuses and regular relays and fuses. Codes pop up momentarily after it stalls out. I get a SPN 2000 FMI 9 and a OEM CODE 1117. No idea on where to even start at this point.

This is Google info for spn code .. loss of communication with ecm.. sounds like wiring problem. Screenshot_20241029_135300_Chrome.jpg

I checked my J1939 wiring and all is good there. Everything ohm’d out correctly. I’m pulling my hair out on this one lol. I know I’ve got a wiring issue or possible ecm fault just trying to be sure before I think about more parts.

    D.Tibbitt Thanks this.

I've had 2 09's do the same thing. Each time the ECM was bad.

Was hoping no one would say that. Gonna check cam and crank signals first then see what I’m gonna do. Anyone know where the crank position sensor is located?

    TheLoadOut and D.Tibbitt Thank this.

Going to be your ECM. When truck won't start, take butt end of screwdriver and bang on ECM. Would be ideal if someone is trying to crank engine at same time. I am quite confident on this one. This model ECM has been by far the most problematic one for Cummins.

10-4 will let yall know what transpires lol. Just got into the trade I’m only 25 so my knowledge on the trucks is limited to say the least. Thanks for all the help though!

I always hate calling ECMs and resort to that dead last, but I have also experienced this like the others have said, bad ECM. When warm/hot, solder joint breaks contact internally. I think there might be post here of someone getting the ECM repaired and a picture of the common failure point on main battery supply bus bars inside.
