Been a company steering wheel holder for 30 years. I say that because you no longer are required to think some device in the cab or at you safety managers office will fire you if you make a mistake. Luckily I did not make a mistake, but I have decided to lose the rest of my mind and try Owner Operator for a while. I know why don't I just shoot myself now, well I only have 4 more years to early retirement, but my company put us all out on the bricks, because they could not cut driver pay anymore, and still hold on to their national contract.
Well I have a few retirement dollars to throw away and I am looking to buy a truck in the 2008 to 2010 range. I know most recommend the DD15 but I was wondering what the problem people had with the 2010 Cummins ISX 470. Good bad or indifferent, thanks.

That Cummins is a good engine for the most part all trucks have break downs the most common complaint I hear about the dd15 is that's its in a freightliner and injector cups can fail before 500000 but both good engines if taken care of

Don't buy any truck made in exactly the range you are eyeing. Either be emissions non compliant (no dpf or def) or be compliant with the new stuff (both dpf+ def). A dpf only truck is a great way to truly throw away your retirement dollars. If you go ahead anyway, you will likely wish you had just lit your money on fire instead of the constant headaches you will likely (95%) encounter.

Good motor but be prepared to replace egr valve and leaking egr cooler I drive a 2010 isx 550 both had to be replaced other than that good motor with good power.

Read the cummins cm871 technical thread by Rawze. Awesome read about the egr and dpf systems on the isx of those years. Most of it applies to the egr system in the earlier cm870 isx as well, took some figuring out the differences but he was dead on with what was causing my egr related poor mpg.

I really want to thank you after reading Rawze thread I understand the proper maintenance involved in the cummin with dpf. I also understand why the fleetshops have so much trouble with them because they are unwilling or untrained to do the small maintenance required.

Thanks that's good advice unfortunately I live in California so I will have to put a set of wings under my trailer. And buy a truck 2008 or above. And believe me if I could buy a 2003 or older I would. But I am thinking there might be some money to be made hauling freight to the California border and back. Besides the wife said I have to come home sometime and I would hate to have to commute to Nevada. To pickup my truck.

Thank Rawze! I have that unicorn of ISX's, almost 700k with its original egr cooler still intact. After reading his thread I checked my diff press sensor and maint records from Landair and discovered it was also original. $160 dollars from cummins dealer +20 minutes of install time and I have a Happy ISX! :)
