Hi, Im a long time reader first time poster.
My dad has a small company of 5 trucks we live in CA and currently CARB is threatening to start fining us for outdated trucks. One of these trucks is a 88 Peterbilt single rear axel we use it about 4 months out the year couple months hauling asphalt and couple hauling AG, the truck only has 250xxx miles and runs great but CA says at the end of this year its junk.
Has anyone swapped a 2010 motor into a older mechanical truck? Spending $60,000 plus for a newer single rear axel to abuse on asphalt hauls is just ridiculous.

I posted this on another thread but, IIRC, there was a box on the registration for CARB that asked; "is this vehicle used part or full time in agriculture?". I'm guessing there's some sort of exemption for ag stuff if you look hard enough. JMO, if CARB shuts down all the pre '07 trucks in 2014 there's gonna be some "angry" farmers, ya think?

A new " crate" motor with the aftertreatment system is probably going to be like 30 grand. And I think that a new truck is more cost effective .
You might want to verbally hammer on some of those jerk off politicians you have out there......... -
there is a AG exemption if we use the truck less then 15,000 or 20,000 miles depending on exact year, but road construction is a decent part of our income. If we need to downsize to fit the new laws 5 employees will lose their jobs
the more Ive read about the CARB department the angrier I get but there isnt anything we can do short of moving out of California
the newer truck maybe more cost effective but we basically need to replace 3 trucks the pm retrofit filter just seems like a waste of money -
Moving out of Ca. is an option but, you'd have to start your business over in another state but I'm sure you're well established in Ca. I feel your pain, I don't live there but do like going to Ca. from the east coast. If I understand correctly, EVERYTHING is affected like construction equipment and such. Come 2014, when they turn the key off on 100k pieces of equipment, sompn's gonna hit the fan. BOL on your decisions and keep us posted what happens.

We have our whole year pretty much covered so we stay busy all year the idea of starting over is very intimidating. If they actually manage to shut down everyone, our company will be back to my dad and myself we will lose our construction side and have to lose half our harvest contracts we just wont have the equipment to cover it all

Sad stuff, only saving grace is everyone will be dealing with same problem. This will benefit LARGE companies and punish the bread and butter, companies like yours. I am sure you will never get a mechanical engine with all the retrofits in the world to work. Might find 03 or newer and then spend another 10 to 20 K and this still might not be compliant. Spent many years with a cat dealer, i think you will be over 40K might get close to 50 to get a crate engine, add aftertreatment and make it work. Thenk you will want to hit yourself in the head repeadedly while trying to keep it running. Good luck and god bless. Country was and is built on small companies, you guys will figure it out.

MAWK Industries, in Arizona, makes conversion harnesses. I bought one to convert a 1984 from a Big Cam III Cummins, to an N14 Cummins. Very good quality and customer service. This harness cost $875, plus $20 UPS ground shipping to Alabama.

It can be done beat bet would be to find a wrecked truck that way you get the engine and dpf with all the brackets i did a couple swaps for a company i worked for a year or so ago in so cal took a rolled pete and took out a isx and put it in a 86 pete
