I have replaced fuel filters that made no difference.
No check engine light.
When pulling a hill under 1500 rpms it will spit and buck.
Almost sounds like an air pop off valve spitting under the hood when it does this.
Sometimes i smell raw fuel but can't find a trace of it under the hood.
Local shop has no idea what to look for.
Any ideas from you Cummins guys?

Mine does it to. It's the cap on the anti freeze overflow tank releasing. It only holds 5psi of pressure. Get a new one. I'm positive that's what it is. A mechanic told me that by governing those engines they made them run hot. They have all kinds of water leaks.
-
The fuel smell is raw fuel dumping because, again, of the engine governing. I'm almost sure it has nothing to do with the spitting noise. It all just adds up over the course of the day after the engine starts running hot.

Have the EGR checked. I would also have someone look at the EGR cooler. This will give a good indication of EGR performance even if the computer indicates nothing is wrong.
The smell of raw fuel could be the injector in your DPF is malfunctioning. You may have a combination of issued, or one single one.
Good luck! -
my N-14 used to do the same thing when i got a new ecm...

You are describing a bad egr valve. That is the first signs of the bad valve.
-
Thanks guys! It is not hitting the governor when it does it.It is at lower rpms.1200 to 1400 or so.
It will turn 2100.
The truck bucks for a second like it lost fuel pressure.
Funny you mention the coolant tank cap.It fits really loose.
I just fixed a leaking coolant hose and it felt like it helped the pulling problem just a little.
I will pick up a new cap and give that a shot. -
Thanks Shaggy,I will get that checked out too.

what he's describing is a backfiring out the intake valve. if you can catch it at night. you'll see fuel spitting out the air filter.
except you probablhy only have one and it sits under the hood. which is why your smelling raw fuel.
it happens to me every 40,000 miles. new air filters fixes the problem
it's probably time for a overhead which is next on my list of maintanance
my egr tests out good along with the cac and turbo actuator.pete1 Thanks this. -
I talked to the company i lease it from and they said no overhead is needed on these new ISX motors! What the hell?
I'm at 265,000 and the engine has never been touched.
