These engines use a closed crankcase breather system. Blow-by gases are reintroduced into the intake right before the turbo. The crank case oil separator is known for being insufficient of getting oil separated from the blow-by gases. Engines that are in certain types of duty will bypass more oil into the intake that others. These are engines with prolonged idling, and/or constant stop and go applications. The crank case oil separator is a centrifugal type. The faster it spins, the more centrifugal force is created forcing oil out of the gases. At idle, more slobber is created, but also the centrifuge is spinning at its slowest speed. The speed of the separator is created by engine oil pressure spraying on a paddle wheel. At idle is when the oil pressure is also at its lowest. With stop and go applications there is some lag and pressure imbalances where there significantly more negative pressure at the intake as the turbo is spinning up and oil can be actually sucked up through the separator. Some oil presence is normal, but should not be clogging an air to air. If you removed the intake elbow pipe between the air cleaner and the turbo, you will see the tracking of oil coming from the separator return hose. There are blow-by tests and separator speed tests for this.

Before you just replace the CAC, know that most international dealers have cleaning tool to clean the CAC just for this reason. They can perform the process without even removing the CAC. Also make sure that you clean the turbos as well because I am sure they are coked up as well. Like HeavyD said, most of this is caused by lots of idle time and low rpms.

Yes, there are open crankcase breather update kit where you basically install a down draft tube to vent the blow by gas out to atmosphere instead of returning it to the engine. The elbow intake for the blow by gases gets blocked off too.

Is there any way to clean out the turbos on these 6.0 - 7.6L engines with that junk in them? That is without taking them apart.

Not sure which engines series you are talking about. We go by Maxxforce 7 or DT or 10. On Maxxforce DT,9 and 10 with dual turbos you can easily take the compressor housings off and just spray brake clean to remove the junk, and wash out the housings in a parts cleaner. On smaller Maxxforce 7 there is actually an induction cleaning solution you run through the engine while it is running. After treatment must be disconnected for that.
