Hi all! I'm in Sacramento, CA. In the process of buying a tractor and dolly out of Portland, OR. Tractor doesn't have a pintle hook on it. It's 700 miles to look at the truck at Schneider, and the guy I'm dealing with is in Green Bay, so it's not like he can run out and look!
My question: Are there knockouts on the cross-member to install a pintle hook? And I guess that leads to more questions... where to get a pintle hook, are there makes/models to avoid?
Thanks!
Tom

Are you towing something substantial with it? Or just to move trailer converters around?
On most trucks I've had the rear crossmember isn't strong enough to pull a trailer, so it needs to be beefed up with that in mind.
First place I worked we only used them to position trailer converters around the parking lot. First guy that tried to pull an actual trailer with it, bent the crossmember all to heck.Binder Minder Thanks this. -
No there aren't any knockouts to install a pintle hook.
Just drill the holes and mount it.
You're only using it to tow a dolly, so any reputable manufacturer should do the job. -

Look for trailer supply/repair places. They will sell and install pintle hooks, air couplings and everything else.

I have heard that for Cascadia there is special cross member if you need to install pintle hook. Compare thickness of the cross member of your truck to other truck that has pintle hook. Again I just heard that , not sure.

The rear crossmember on the fleet spec Crapcadia is not at all set up for a pintle.
You can special order a crossmember for pintle when you order them new, but I just about guarantee a fleet like Schneider did not do that.
When they need a pintle, and they seldom do, they just drill out the non-pintle crossmember for a 5 ton pintle. That is only good for jockeying around the dolly at best. I have seen some mega fleet drivers rip out the entire crossmember just jockeying around dollys.
So suit yourself: Drill out the lightweight crossmember and replace it later or go to the dealer or fabrication shop and get it done right. -
Yeah I'd say any pintle hook you throw on that stock cross member is not gonna be rated for highway. We aren't allowed to pull dollies on bobtails anymore because of this, whether that's DOT or just the company i don't know though. None of our tractors have the beefed up pintle hooks or safety chain hooks.
You'll also need pigtail converter and air lines that are long enough to reach from the cab to the dolly as well as a way to keep them all from getting ran over.Binder Minder Thanks this.
