I just started saving up as much cash as I can in order to go to driving school in May. However, now that the talks of $4 gas prices by summer are swirling around, I'm starting to get a little anxious about the probability of getting hired once I'm done with school. Cuz I'm pretty sure $4 gas will bring on $5 diesel, or so.
Has any one heard anything from your companies concerning how much, or how little, hiring will be done this coming year? I'm just trying to get a feel for how my odds are for this summer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So many drivers quit, or are fired.....
You're Golden !!!! -
Inventory levels are being kept at all time lows, which means these warehouses are using the the trucks on the hwy as their secondary warehouses.......which in turn means more drivers will be needed.......right now that void is being filled by a glut of unemployed people, but as the economy recovers they will go back to their previous employment (many people are just not cut out to be drivers). CSA2010 will weed out another bunch of drivers, as their previous records get transfered to the new system and companies start droping them like crazy to improve their own company score. Sad thing is, the companies improperly maintained equipment is what put many of these drivers on the "Bad Driver" list to start with. I think a day will come when, drivers will go to a drop lot to grab an empty and there will not be one road worthy DOT inspectable trailer on the lot. The shipper will freak out, due to the fact it will take 2 days to get a trailer on site for their live load and then that company will start shopping for a new carrier with better service. I hope the these tighter regs affecting the company scores will in turn help keep safer equipment on the highway........but only time will tell. I write this as I look at 3 MT's on the lot with bald tires, mud flaps hanging, and a lic plate light missing!

I don't think the price of fuel is going to effect you getting hired. The trucking industry is and always will be hiring. It is a very tough job and the majority of truckers don't drive over the road for very long. At a trucking school out of a class of 30 people probably 1-2 people will make the one year mark as an over the road trucker. In this world there will always be a demand for doctors, hookers, and truckers! Welcome to the forum and good luck to you.

Good to hear, drivers. Thanks for the pick-me-up, got a little nervous when I was hearing those reports. I'm just counting down the days when I can leave office life. You mentioned that some people aren't cut out for truck driving, well I'm not cut out for being a 9-5'er.
Thanks again for the info.
