I have a 2012 ProStar+ with MaxxForce engine. When I'm parked and idle, every 3 minutes (on the dot) the truck will increase RPMs until just below 1500. The clutch, brake, or fuel pedal must be pressed to bring the RPMs back down to idle (600). Then after another 3 minutes, the process starts over. What could be causing this behavior?

Its pretty common. They do that to keep the exhaust temp high, reducing soot, which blocks the dpf
paul_4lp and Charli Girl Thank this. -
Man,That would get annoying.
My old ProStar was a Cummins powered 2012.....never had that issue.
It may be worth asking the dealer about it.
Does the exhaust temp light come on when it does this?
I bet HeavyD would know the answer -
The engine just does this to keep warm. If it senses temperatures under 50 degrees it ramps up the RPM to 1500. The current generation of engines have twice the cooling capacity they used to with all the EGR coolers and what not. It takes a lot more to get the engine up to temp if it is just at idle.
lv gn Thanks this. -
No, the high temp light does not come on when this happens.
This makes sense though (what heavyd said), but I wanted another's opinion that has more knowledge in this area than I do. At first I thought it may just have been because we had the heat on, and it was trying to keep the engine warm so they air can heat up. Then again, that may not even be how all that works, for all I know, haha.
Thank you everyone for the replies! -
Just make sure to take it in if the engine starts to idle up higher than 2000 or starts to use oil.
