Understood. So, what in your opinion or knowledge is the rule for termination or retaining your job after an incident such as that? Is is conditional or automatic heel toe express?

depends on the company. some fire automatically for anything.lol

on the atlas. I buy the unlaminated ones at about this time of year. price is down for the 2012. I buy one every year to keep up to date on the stuff in the front. read that stuff over. useful info in front of that atlas.

In the instance of the Crete driver in the article, the bridge was marked as "Low Clearance" @ 12'.

Even if it were 13' 6", which should be the absolute minimum for most tractor trailer combinations, whenever you encounter an old bridge such as this, look at the signage, look at the underside of the bridge in question. He should not have even attempted something like this regardless of what the GPS was telling him or indicating, with only 12' of clearance. Real world will always outweigh whatever you're using as a reference.

Don't forget items to take into consideration such as packed snow underneath in winter, which may increase your height and profile and lessen the clearance posted and available.

My guess is that was his final assignment unless he had a stellar record and tenure with the company.

Judging by how far underneath the bridge he is and the relative collapsing of the trailer, it looks as though he never saw the sign? It looks more like a woops moment than an attempt? It would appear that he hit the underside at "speed". Is that a fair assumption/assessment?

Can't say for sure as I wasn't there. Just by looking at the pictures and nothing else, if he were creeping forward rather than at speed, he may very well have made contact with the underside, but may have had some ability to react to it and stop, or limit any further contact rather than to continue forward and crumple the trailer. Taking it back another step, he would or should have anyway, seen the clearance restriction in the first place.

Until someone comes out with a super dooper, real time, updated every 5 seconds type, reference system, just remember what's on the Atlas or GPS today may not be the same thing as to what's actually on the ground when you get to it.

    For NYC
Warning signs are diamond shape (square with one diagonal vertical) with a black legend and border on a yellow background. In addition the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law (Section 1640.22(d)) requires posting when the measured overhead clearance is less that 14 feet and specifies that the legal clearance shall be one foot less than the measured clearance.
