Does he have Service Maxx or Navistar Engine diagnostic software to perform an actuator output test, or an air management test? With a healthy engine, during an air management test, the engines runs at a higher rpm and produces about 8-12 psi of boost. The engine will test the egr valve, waste gate and back pressure valve one at a time. The program will have a bar graph of intake manifold pressure and exhaust back pressure during the test. When the egr valve is commanded open, the boost will slowly drop to about 2 psi, but you also hear the change in engine tone due to the exhaust recirculation through the engine. Then the valve closes and boost will return to about 8 psi and then the waste gate is commanded open. The boost will drop to zero until that part of the test is done. The gate is closed, boost returns to 8 psi and then the back pressure valve is closed. Boost drops to near zero and back pressure is usually over 20 psi. The other test is the actuator test. During the actuator tests, just the key is on and engine not running, but you need full air pressure built up first. You can exercise each actuator and actually watch it to see what is doing. Both the back pressure and waste gate linkages do get stuck sometimes and need some love taps with some penetrant spray to free up. Also, sometimes, the air control valve becomes faulty and does allows air to the waste gate all the time.

They didn’t do any of these tests. They were going by the sound that I described. They took off the high pressure Turbo today and found the back of the Turbo the spinner ( don’t know the name) inside broken and sitting inside the Turbo. They said that I need a new High pressure Turbo. They also mentioned the low pressure Turbo also have a Play and that I should change it because it can go anytime. Low pressure is going to cost $1685 and the high pressure $1280 and that’s just the parts price and the Labor will be added once done. How many hours of Labor required to put both Turbos? The low pressure moves a little from side to side.. do you think I should change it?

I can't say without looking at it. Some play is normal and turbos should not be condemned on play alone. Blade contact with the housing is the only real way to condemn a turbo. I don't get into labor times because this just starts a fight that I don't want to be in the middle of. For sure, these are horrible to replace and not a quick job. You are lucky to be in and out in one day.

I totally understand that.. I ended up changing both Turbos but after changing them I hear Air pressure leaking when I accelerate and they are telling me that it’s the leak from exhaust manifold. But I had that leak for past 6 months and it never made a pressure loosing sound but As soon as they change the Turbos I start to hear this sound. I think it’s the Turbos maybe one of the fitting or seal isn’t properly sealed. What do you think HeavyD?

Yes, I believe it is something leaking from what they did.

They still can’t figure out where is the air pressure leak coming from. Also My clutch was grinding whenever I shift the first gear and the mechanic said that wasn’t Normal and I had the clutch replaced 4 months ago. He said that he can add a metal plate to adjust the gap in the clutch and the sound will go away and that I may need to install one every 3 to 4 months. The grinding went away after the plate was installed but now I’m hearing a grinding sound from the clutch while the engine is idling and it goes away when I press the clutch. When I start the engine I hear a loud grinding sound but when I press the clutch it goes away. Can you please let me know what could be causing this? Here’s the picture of where he installed it.

Clutch brake. They are a bandaid fix. If it is grinding, make sure it is adjusted properly. Did they install a new clutch brake when the clutch job was done?

Yes they did a new Clutch break as well.. I just had a Road service come to take a look at and he said that the transmission is shot because there’s no oil in their and tracked the oil leak from where the Radiator is. He said when the new CAC and Radiator was Installed they didn’t install the fitting properly and that’s what killed the Transmission.
    Attached the picture of it.
