If you have the vehicle VIN you can run it by Peterbilt to make sure all "campaigns" have been completed. A couple have said the DEF system had issues. If it was widespread there will have been a campaign by Paccar to fix it; all OEMs do this when a widespread problem arises. Get records from the previous owner if you can to make sure the DPF and DEF system has been maintained properly. I have a 2012 Pete 386 with a Cummins, bought used, and it has been great. The Paccar 13 liter would probably save more fuel being it is smaller displacement and the same power as the Cummins.
2013 Paccar MX 455 buy or pass?

Thanks for all the feedback! The truck is at the local Peterbilt dealership and they sent me all the records from day one (27 pages). This is one of 4 trucks I am looking at as I like keeping my options open. I may go take a second look at an '06 Volvo today at MHC if I feel up to it.

Probably gonna go with the '06 Volvo that has the 2yr/200k warranty.

There's no warranty being offered on the Peterbilt and there is no DEF system on the Volvo.
-
Just make sure your company (either current or the one you plan to lease on to) doesn't require a California compliant truck before you buy
-
No they don't, they don't actually even go into California. I spoke to them on the phone this morning just in case and they have already approved the truck. For $16,000 with the warranty and with only six hundred thousand miles on it I really can't go too wrong. I even have all the maintenance receipts going back to the day the truck was brand new.
I hate using speech to text, it really makes a mess of things.Last edited: Nov 29, 2016
