Turn key on everything comes on after 3-5 seconds ( NO ENG ) displayed on dash. You can try to start it and the starter clicks but every 4th time you try the starter engages enough to bump the fan a couple inches. SPN is 639 from the display.
Checked all fuse in glove box.
Checked fuse in box on fire wall and fuses in the other box that has ignitions fuse and relay. All have 12v
You can jump the starter turns like crazy but wont turn on. Runner to the starter get 12v for a second then 0.
Changed solenoid on starter, had a lose bolt that wiggled.
Only thing I see is DEF tank lights up all green then goes to 1 bar then yellow then flashing red. Not sure this would cause it to not start, we did put 2 gallons of def in so it does have some but still shows empty.
Anything Im missing here??

Low def level can cause the truck to not start. I would add 5 more gallons. It shows empty and the light flashes red so the level is too low and this is what the ECM reads.
SPN 639, Fail 7 Is no communication between the Engine ECM and other modules. Check for an inline fuse blown for the ECM between the batteries and ECM. -
The owner was there checking fuses with the key on, Im thinking that code popped up when he pulled the ignition fuse and put it back in everything on the engine turned of then came back on. Ill tell him to add more def see if that gives a reading on the gauge

Bad cpc (common powertrain controller) check the 5 amp cpc fuse under the hood fuse box, if it’s good then you need a new CPC
-
I checked the harness into the the sensor and only show 3volts (Im guessing its min 5) checked the connector on the frame and it only shows 3volts (was thinking bad wire) that wire goes into a ecm right next to the def tank (this is a friends trucks I have all 2000 and older) def gauge in truck flashes red trying to look for a schematic for the ecm to see what its doing but no luck on finding that yetwtokhi Thanks this.

The red light flashing is the fact that there is communication with the ACM or the ECM, the CPC controls the communication between modules, remove your center dash piece and the CPC hangs on the right side wall, if you have another truck that is the same you can swap cpcs to see if it fixes the issue. but first check the 5 amp fuse the for the cpc in the fuse box that is under the hood on the driver side splash guard

If he was checking fuses he might’ve pulled the fuse I mentioned and burnt it or put it back in the wrong spot, fuse f10 is a 5 amp fuse check that first and if it’s in the right spot
-
checked fuse everything was good power all the way into the cab told owner to drop it off at freightliner I was looking at it because he was a friend so free of charge but this needs a computer to hook up too which I dont have
wtokhi Thanks this. -
If the fuse is good then it’s gonna be the cpc itself, 1000 dollar part and 500 for programming
