    Hello, FELLOW, HARD WORKING O/Os!
I’m changing oil on my rig, 2018 Volvo VNL 780. Just hit little over 16K and wanted ask your advice what is the best oil I could use. Is it better synthetic (45k to 50k) or conventional (every 15k) and what brand?

    Greatly appreciate your help!

What psi do these engines run at with warm oil at idle and as well as when driving?

Thanks for reply. Do you change every 15k?

I do changes at 16k to 20k. I shoot for that window. I use to do 30k oil changes but racking up the miles.

Only reason I ask is something I read on rawze website.

He made the claim shell is slightly better for lower psi engines where delo has the slight advantage for higher psi engines. They are both very good oil and are available everywhere. Just pick 1 and use it forever never change the brand or grade or anything. They all have slightly different additives in the oil and if you switch part way through the engines life cycle it can result in new wear patterns developing and thus a shorter engine life. Or that's one theory anyway.

I don't buy into any of those extended interval claims. All oil will collect some small fragments of metal wear. How long do you want that cycling through your engine? I believe in changing it at around 15,000 miles or so regardless of what oil is used. The oil filter can't be too restrictive or it won't allow it to flow quickly as needed especially at start up on a colder day. So you can't really win by changing it on long intervals.

Why do you think it is ok to extend drain intervals just because you use synthetic oil. Synthetic has nothing to do with extended drains. Do oil analysis and figure out the best time to change your oil, add a good bypass filter like an OPS if you rely want to extend the drain intervals. Also read your Owners manual, Volvo will have recommendations on what oil to use.
