Would anyone know if the Ram 5500 rear axle would bolt on to a Ram 3500 C&C?
Is there a way to update a truck's GVWR after an upgrade?

I want to upgrade my trailer but the trailer I want will overload the trucks rear axle weight rating by about 2k lbs loaded and I don't want to change my truck. The 5500's rear axle would be perfect if it would just bolt on without too much modifications.

The housing is way bigger on the 5500 chassis so it won’t fit with out extensive modifications.
Only the manufacturer can set a trucks GVWR.
You can modify a truck but the GVWR always remains the same.

Any other heavier duty axles that might fit?
Would weigh stations take into consideration an upgraded axle on the truck and accept a heavier axle weight on the scale as long as the registered GCVWR is ok?

    • There is basically no way to legally up grade the axel weight rating or the GVW rating of a truck after manufacturing.
With that being said I routinely see in my lane (New York to Florida ) 3500 pickups going thru the scales who are obviously over weight on there drive axel and also over on there tire capacity with out issue and continue on there way.
I suppose it’s like the over hang law where a lot do it with out issues but then there is that one dot cop who is going to make you have a bad day.

Probably not so much the axle, but rear suspension and frame as well. I used to drive a newer F550 mechanic truck. Loaded up I was pretty close to the GVW rating at around 18,500 lbs. If I was hauling components or extra tooling for a job I'd be close to 19,000 lbs. No way an F350 frame would have survived those weights.

Yeah I've seen them too. I've seen 3500 and F350s hauling 5 car trailers. Even my truck which has a factory gcvwr of only 33k is registered for 40k and have scaled 36k at a weight station and got the green light and kept going. I use drivewyze and get bypass on about 95% of open weight stations.
I want to get an Infinity GN450 and the trailer when empty is about 12k lbs and has a rating of 24k which is 2k less than my current trailer but can haul 4 full sized cars with the front car lifted with hydraulics and angled down on my drive axle/fifth wheel.
I am having air bags installed on my truck this weekend to help out with leveling my rear and thinking of swapping out the wheels to the 5500 19.5" in the future or maybe just find much better rated tires for my current wheels. I was told if dot thinks I am over weight they will be looking at the tire load capacity mostly.
I am afraid of that one dot cop that will make me have a bad day...
