    Hi All,
I am considering purchasing a 2020 Volvo VNL 860. 466K miles, 9000 engine hours, 450 idle hours, D13, iShift and a ThermoKing APU.

I have been working with the seller, a smaller trucking company that is selling some of their trucks and replacing with new VNLs. I think they never trade in trucks to the dealer as they can get more for selling outright.

I have a ECM dump showing any codes/faults. See the attached file (ECM Dump.pdf). There are no active faults, but 15 inactive faults. The pdf file/attached/ is 9 pages long. It looks like the mechanic did the dump on 1/10/2024 several times over a few hour period. The same pdf shows other ECM dumps on 9/26/2023. There were a couple active faults in September but none now.

You may notice that since 9/26/2023 until 1/10/2024 there were only 7 engine hours put on the truck, according to the ECM dump. Perhaps the truck was in the yard/off the road being prepared to sell. I am not sure.

    Question 1:
Are any of these inactive faults concerning? I looked up all of them, but only found 6 or so online that gave any indication to the issue.

Secondly, I had the local Volvo dealer run a report to get all the factory warranty claims (repairs) that had been done on the truck by a Volvo dealer. There were only three claims: Initial PDI, Stuck brake slack adjuster, fixing the paint on the cab door. That is it. I have been looking a used truck to purchase for 3 months. For each candidate truck I get the warranty claim report. Every truck I have considered has had some warranty repairs. Some trucks have had major repairs while other have had only minor item. This truck, the one on my short list, has virtually nothing repaired via warranty.

    Question 2:
Could it be even remotely possible that this truck has had no issues that needed Volvo/Dealer to fix? I know this trucking company, that is selling the truck, has their own shop and does all their PMs, and most work.

    Thank you for your time.

Personally I'd take it to the dealer and pay for them to go over it. Pull oil samples etc. But that's just me. The ECM files mean nothing to me as I know they can be misleading to put it mildly. However I am NOT a fan of Volvo.

I forgot to mention. The truck had a PM recently with new oil so getting an oil sample/analysis would be useless as it would only show brand new oil.
Also, the compression test (computer based not manual test) showed all cylinders 95% or higher.

Oil samples would include the tranny and rears not just the engine

The trans fluid/filter were changed a couple thousand miles ago too as well as the differential. Hence oil samples would show nothing. I know this can be a red flag where the seller may be trying to hide stuff. I would have much rather been able to get the oil samples prior to PM.

I should have all the PM history on the truck by day's end today. I did talk to the shop manager earlier this week, who gave me the recent PM history and it seems the truck had very routine PMs including DPF cooking/cleaning at 382K and the APU PM-ed since last October.

I would STILL want my OWN mechanic to go over the truck, but that's just me.

My experience is this, out of the couple dozen or so trucks I purchased used, OAs are still useful for building a baseline at the least. Some trucks even with a fresh oil change and new oil in the trans and diffs, run for a few hours or dyno'd have shown problems because of the residue in the sump or case (trans/diffs) that get mixed with the fresh oil and gets into the sample.

I'd go with a KWhopper, at least there you have a shred of resale. Nothing wrong with Volvos, they haul a lot of freight, but quite frankly, this truck been around the block. 466K in 3.5 years is a lot. Remember, companies don't sell good trucks, usually the tired duds. I think you'll be in for a slew of repairs with this one, it's why they are letting it go, so THEY won't have to do them.

there is nothing in those codes that would be alarming, I have a few fleets that even though they have warranty they request i repair most of the problems cuz they do not accrue the down time so the only way one of their trucks makes in the dealership is if something major is going on, you have codes for battery voltage that will cause most of datalink faults in the system there is only one code for fuel system cam that i would worry about but is seems like truck ran out of fuel besides that its just communicatiion ########. i would clean all codes and take for an extensive test drive if possible see if anything comes back with those miles you should have some kind of warranty remaniing on this vehicle anyway.
