as the title states, i just turned 21 and i have a class A CDL with doubles/trip and tanker. for the last two years i have been pulling double pups intrastate. getting paid $15 an hour to pull doubles and deliver 400+ peices out of the back of the truck with a two wheeler is starting to get old to me. I have the two years with the company plus all the help i did on the farm driving since i could drive. I have a friend who i work with who I have been talking about going team drivers with who has 4 years exp. I was wondering who would be a good company to work for (i have read all the werner/swift horror stories) or should i look for an O/O position? I have a good credit score so financing shouldnt be a problem and i know you can find 400+ HP petes with 13 or 18 speeds for under 25k. The guy id like to go teams with is a certified diesel mechanic to so he could drive and fix the truck. but with this economy im just not sure which direction to go in.
21 y/o needs some guidance

I've heard from people that unless all the pay from the truck is going to one household that teaming does'nt pay. In other words unless you two are more than "freinds" it may be better for you each to go buy a truck and start a small business, if your looking to be O/O's.

Alot of companies get rid of their trucks at 5 years. That's the point where the cost is too high compared with buying a new one for the company. Those companies have mechanics too and those are the trucks you can buy for the price you listed. It's a huge mistake to buy a truck without knowing the business inside and out. You won't last very long. You have some experience but I believe you might have some trouble passing that experience off as OTR to some companies. You'll need to look real hard for a good job and that means getting out there and asking.

You're actually very smart to ask questions and not just jump ship. $15 an hour and home daily isn't a bad gig. But at 21, you've got a lifetime ahead of you, so investigate first. Things to consider: Your friend may not be so friendly if you team up, a new company may screwe you over and you might wish you were back on the daily grind. And you mentioned the economy, I don't think it's back yet. Look before you leap......
