http://www.irs.gov/uac/Form-2290,-Heavy-Highway-Vehicle-Use-Tax-Return Claim suspension from the tax when a vehicle is expected to be used 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles) during the period

If you claim less than 5,000 miles, you will often be asked for documentation.

that's a great tip. I wonder how I can prove that it hasn't been used? Other than a sworn statement from a storage company representative. what's that rule (absence of evidence , is not evidence)
-
Maybe if you had a service done to it around April of 2012 and they wrote the mileage on the documents and you have your current mileage that might work
-
Logs or DVIR's with mileages on them would be sufficient to prove unuse, I should think. Also IFTA filings, and other things that have mileage readings on them could prove useful.
-
If you had it in storage, you probably paid for it. Bill or receipt ?
-
for sure! I have a few of those...the bill for storage is a pain...but at least it's secure. IT's 344pm, and I've got the 2290 (Category W) filled out. Way easier than I thought. I guess i'll have to wait to see if they want proof of non-use. that'll be for another rainy day. thanks !
