I am thinking about going part time with a bobtail transfer co. that wants to charge me $25 per week, even if I only drive 1 day, for workmen's comp. How can they even charge me anything? The co. is Apollo Transfer out of Macungie, PA. Advise appreciated.

That's a new one on me, but, I suppose it's like companies charging the employee for medical coverage, in a way.
-
But it's not optional, they are saying t's mandatory. That cannot be legal.
-
The company I worked for last charged $80 a mo

I would call th PA labor board and find out about this.I never heard of an employer charging there employees a monthly fee for workers comp.Something doesn't sound right.
luvmyhubby Thanks this. -
It sounds like this is a contract job and you are the subcontractor. If you do not carry your own insurance then the company that you are working for will place you on their insurance and charge you for it. You will not be an employee of this company and you will be responsible for your own income taxes, etc.
lil may Thanks this. -
Agreed...sounds like your entering as a contractor. The ( Texas ) employer MUST pay for the EMPLOYEE.
-
Sounds like a 1099 employee to me
I could be wrong -
WHY THE HELL DO I HAVE TO PRESS 1 FOR ENGLISH???
AND THEY TELL YOU THIS IN ENGLISH!?! -
Reason I say a 1099 / contractor Is because
I had thought about buying a truck and putting a driver on ( which I decided against ) butt the company I was leased to
( Superior Carriers ) required a workmans comp insurance it cost $116.00 monthly per additional driver
Seems as if the original poster was being charged for his own comp
Now ......
Is it fair ?
Yes & No
Yes , - because it is a cost of business to being a independent or sub contractor that the equipment owner would have to occur by adding a 1099 driver to their equipment ...
No,- because you are providing a service to the equipment owner and should be a cost of their operation .
Workmans comp = occupational accident
Difference is OC/ AC can only be put on the owner of the equipment if it's the driver .. Other wise must be
Workmans comp
Question : would I charge my driver for workmans comp ? NO because it's just a cost of my operation in order to do business which in result protects my company in case of employee injury
