I came out of plenty of quarries @ 80k with 550hp, RTLO 13A, 3.70s and 11r24.5s left lanin it all over NC. Up to 10% takeoffs from idle in low hole. I wouldnt want or need 3.90 or anything in the 4s. Itd kill the highway side. 3.70s i could run 70 at 1500.
Thats goin slow on i40.
3.91 vs 4.31 for up to 80K lbs

Did y’all read the part where it’s going to be a local truck, and a straight truck with a log loader at that? Being 80,000 or 100,000, riding up and down the highway is quite different from being 80,000 or more and riding down a horse trail in the hills?wore out, cke, Tug Toy and 1 other person Thank this. -
Ya.... still don’t think he got to have more than a 3.91.......
But maybe I’m wrong...AModelCat Thanks this. -
Just talked to my kw salesperson says 3.91 is fine he did say he usually orders 4.10 for a truck like that ........
Pamela1990 and AModelCat Thank this. -

Its looking like 3.91 with an 18 speed since it has the LL gear for creeping around or moving up curbs/stuff at 80K .65-70 mph on the highway would be rare. This is the style truck we are building. Green truck is a 65yd bed, white truck is 75-80yd's.

Quarry roads and logging roads are the same thing, lotta quarries are leased from bowater timber grounds and theyre a lot better road than a small poor folks private quarry, i used to come out of one that had a ledgy creek crossing right in the middle of a turn. Just as your landing gear scraped your nose came up a rock ledge and turned into a gate, it sucked.
I delivered all over pisgah, nantahala and chattahootchee and been up through most of PA and down to morgantown wv to pipeline drop site, ran across hunter mtn in the catskills. Theyre all just paved cart roads. If low hole is deep enough to take off on your steepest hill at max weight without throttle, youre rears are deep enough. Going lower takes from the top. Yes the deeper gear does take that percentage of load off the upstream driveline. One truck did throw shafts several times when it had a cowboy behind the wheel.
Since you guys have lower speed limits the 3.90s wont hurt him but down here long legs are pretty important for navigating the watermellon 500. GPS wont tell you soon enough to know what lane, and at 70mph theres a river of cars packed up trying to come around both sides of you from behind as fast as they will go. Its scary how fast you gotta go down there to make yourself a hole for changing lanes, i hated it.
Not trying to argue with you ruthless, just sharing my experience in the hopes the OP can make his own best choice. If he only wants his hired hand going 55 for insurance discount, hell get him 4.90s.autopaint, Coffey, Brettj3876 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I did this hill many times with 3.70s at 80k and that flat up there is the stop and takeoff for the main road. 3.90s will be great.Last edited: Jul 21, 2020
