Multi-Vehicle Crash Kills 3 in Virginia
    Published November 12, 2011

DINWIDDIE, Va. -- Virginia State Police say three people were killed in a multi-vehicle wreck on Interstate 85 in the southeast part of the state.

All three deaths Friday morning were occupants of pickup truck that was involved in a collision with a logging truck and a chartered bus.

State Police Sgt. Thomas Molnar said one of the vehicles involved in the crash in Dinwiddie County was a bus carrying students from North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C., to an engineering conference in Baltimore.

Four students were examined at the scene but not hospitalized.
The driver of the bus was taken to a hospital for his injuries. The driver of the logging truck had minor injuries.

The identities of the two males and one female killed in the crash have not been released. A fourth person in the car was transported to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

A section of I-85 was closed while investigators sorted out the crash, but all lanes were reopened Friday night.

The North Carolina A&T University students were transported to a nearby fire station and a second charter bus took the students to their final destination.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the apparent chain-reaction crash.

Well it's a small world. A couple of hours after I posted this I ran into a friend of mine at a local club and he was looking rather sullen. Turns out two of the women killed in the Toyota were his nieces in their late 20's.

Bus driver charged in fatal I-85 crash

BY MARKUS SCHMIDT (STAFF WRITER)Published: November 13, 2011

DINWIDDIE - A bus driver has been charged in the fatal crash on Interstate 85 that left three people dead on Friday. Malverse L. Vanloan, 56, of Greensboro, N.C., faces reckless driving charges. Her arraignment date has been set for Jan. 26 in the Dinwiddie County General District Court.

A driver and two passengers were killed in a three-vehicle wreck. The names of the victims are pending positive identification by the Chief Medical Examiners Office in Richmond, Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Molnar said yesterday.

A police investigation has revealed that a chain reaction crash occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m., when the driver of the log truck and of a Toyota Tundra pick up were slowing for traffic while traveling through a work zone in the left northbound lane, near the Dabney Mill Road overpass.

Vanloan was driving a chartered bus that was approaching the two vehicles. The bus contained 49 students, ages 16-22, from North Carolina A&T State University, and a chaperone, traveling to Baltimore to attend a meeting of the National Society of Black Engineers.

"The driver of the charter bus struck the rear of the Toyota Tundra pickup, pushing the pickup into the rear of the log truck," Molnar said.

The driver of the pickup and two passengers died at the scene. A fourth passenger, a female, was also pulled from the crushed vehicle, which appeared to be wedged under the logging truck or loose logs. She was flown by helicopter to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond with serious but not life-threatening injuries. She is currently recovering, according to police.

Four people on the charter bus were checked out by EMTs on scene, Molnar said. The logging truck driver was not injured, but was checked out by EMTs on scene.

Traffic completely halted at the accident site and was routed to U.S. Route 1/ Boydton Plank Road up to the U.S. 460 interchange. All travel lanes on I-85 were reopened by 6 p.m.

The state police accident reconstruction team continues to investigate the crash. Vanloan is in consultation with the Dinwiddie County Commonwealth Attorney's Office, who will review the case and then decide if further charges will be filed. Vanloan was wearing her safety belt at the time of the crash.
