I also have an old xantrex. Must b going on 5-6 yrs now. Black one love it. Got a 2 gauge cable to it and a 100 amp fuse. U can get those at the car stereo section in Wally World. A remote turn on switch from cobra works as well.
AND WHATEVER YOU DO… PUT A FUSE ON IT NO FURTHER THAN 6-10 in FROM THE BATTERY!!!
I don’t wanna be the one dragging you out of ur truck that’s on fire cause it shorted out.
But I still would. AFTER I moved my truck of course.

3000 watts / 12 volts = 250 amps. Then you need to allow for internal loss. -

I looked at a lot of different types of inverters and the Ames really seem to be the best that I could buy. I did not think that's one area that you should cheap out on.
So far it has worked great for me but I will tell you find a good place to Mount it because it's huge.
My refrigerator stays plugged into it constantly, it is never unplugged. The only time I will unplug it is if the truck is going to sit in the garage for more than a day or two days something like that then I'll plug it in to shore power.
I have a generator that runs my space heater and whatever else, but if for some reason I don't want to start the generator I do start the truck to run my microwave or my coffee pot. Not sure that I really need to do that but I do it anyway. But the inverter itself has been great I'm very happy with it. -
It's hard to beat this one, and it's made in USA. Sensata Dimensions 12/1800N 1800 Watt 12 Volt Pure Sine Inverter | eBay

I've had a 1000w xantrex inverter charger for a few years now. Runs everything I need. If you do feel you need more power they have larger. Dont skimp on the quality and if possible do a pure sine wave, your laptop charger will thank you.
Having the charger/shore power is also awesome. When I'm home i leave the fridge stocked and on, in the winter i leave the bunk heater on so no need to mty the cab of freezables. I highly reccomend a charger.Last edited: Mar 17, 2022

I seem to do this EVERY inverter/electrical thread, and people may be getting sick of it, but.... if it helps 1 driver I guess it's worth it.
DON'T cheap out on electrical installs or equipment.
If you think the cables are protected enough, they are not. Make it better.
GET 2, YES 2 SMOKE ALARMS AND HAVE AN EXTENGUISHER ARMS REACH FROM THE BUNK.
Luckily, this happened 1 day after I dropped it for service.
1 day earlier, I would have been asleep.
Edit; the service tech that took these pics said it went from cables melting just in front of the battery box, to this in what seemed like seconds. Inside hood release so when he got back with the extenguisher and keys, all he could do is take a pic.
It happened FAST.
InTooDeep Thanks this.
