Buddy of mine has a FL70 rollback wrecker with one of those Yeller paperweights under the hood. The engine is a 3126B and it has issues we can't figure out.Cold it will NOT fire. You gotta use Ether. Then you gotta give it half throttle to keep it running. For the first 5 or 10 minutes it is blowing a light white smoke and has a dead miss. After about 5 or 10 minutes if you shut it off and fire it up again it runs fine.

This sounds like a problem we just had with an old GMC General with a 6V92TA in it this spring, We finally found a loose fitting in the main fuel line from the tanks (it was hand tight) that never dripped fuel, but allowed all the fuel to drain back to the tanks overnight. After tightening things up and checking for other leaks with a hand vacuum pump you don't even hear the starter turn before it starts up now.

I agree...sounds like a vacuum or air bubble in fuel supply issue.

It being HUEI engine you could be running into worn injector problems, the 466 and 444s would also not idle when cold and would be hard to start until they warmed up.
If it has a plug in heater leave it plugged in and see if that changes anything.

Thanks.I was leaning towards injectors myself.Heck,he says it has close to 800K on the clock and he ain't the best on upkeep if you know what I mean.Run it hard every day.Oil change every million miles or engine rebuild.Which ever comes first. The engine sounded exactly like what my 6V92TA in the General when I first got the truck. It had a stuck injector or six when it showed up.Also, had the same smoke haze.I just didn't know if the Cat having HUEI would do the same thing since the Driptroit is all mechanical.
