All these companies have these territories it seems. I don’t know how they all go about getting there business.
Here it’s a hodgepodge because there’s still quite a handful of city service departments hauling there own garbage it hasn’t all been subbed out.

Waste Management:
There MO has always been to buy up large scale local garbage haulers who do not own there own landfills.
Like here in North East, Ohio Waste Management has bought out.
-Metro Disposal
-American Waste which was actually bought out by Waste of Ohio which was part of Waste Systems USA which was the largest company Waste Management bought out.
-Paradise Disposal
-Universal Disposal
and probably some others as well.
Metro was a big one, Metro was managed by the old Karas Garbage Truck company which was a big time garbage truck company here in Cleveland that was shut down in the middle/late 1990s probably 1998 or so they were bought out by Browning-Ferris Industries and then management once there do not compete was up, went and started Metro Disposal which operated in Cleveland area from like early 2000s till about 2011ish when they were bought out by Waste Management.
However, in certain areas among the big corporate haulers there are still some small time trash collectors that still operate under the radar.
AA Sanitation out of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio is one of them, they've been in business about 40 years serving mostly Hudson, Ohio and surrounding area and they have about 8 trucks and Hudson, Ohio is kind of an odd ball town as it's "open market" which means you the home owner are in charge of what garbage hauler you hall the city doesn't have an arrangement with anyone, so in these towns that are open market these little 6-8 truck garbage truck companies can still operate because they don't have to worry about doing an entire town, they just do some houses here and there and have there commercial routes too, AA Sanitation is just that there a little garbage truck company they have a little shop and the provide residential and commercial pick up they dump at Kimball Companies transfer station in Twinsberg, Ohio as they don't own a landfill or transfer station, most of there garbage trucks from what I've seen are smaller single axle units, however they have a couple tandem axle units, because they do commercial garbage hauling and it's funny how a small company like that can kind of get these territories like they do because around Hudson and Twinsberg, Ohio you see AA Sanitation dumpsters all over the place scattered in with the Republics and Waste Managements of the world.
But it's interesting how AA Sanitation was able to fight for and get there territory. They have to have a sales guy who just runs around and knocks on doors all day, and signs people up and since there local and small time people like that kind of thing I would use them if lived in that part of North East, Ohio, they have really good reviews on the internet.
I know my uncle at his welding shop he kicked Waste Management out he wasn't happy at all with Waste Management which Waste Management was trying to screw us always raising the bill and what not.
Anyhow, to be a small time garbage hauler, it's pretty much a lot of door to door sales and probably good service and discounting in some cases and being involved in the community chamber of commerce and sponsoring stuff and people see you in the community and they want to use you because you're the community hauler.
Euclid Disposal is another small time 8 truck garbage hauler that has territory they have a lot of customers in Mentor, Willoughby, Willowick, and Wickliffe, and Eastlake, Ohio there located in Willoughby, Ohio and seem to have territory.
I see there little smiling dumpsters all over at restaurants I deliver to on my Monday route in Lake County.
I see there roll off truck running around too.
What's interesting these little 8 truck garabage hauling outfits usually have pretty good reviews AA Sanitation and Euclid Disposal there both 4-5 stars on the internet and the customers seem to like there service. I think it's because there small local companies and they can really concentrate better on customer service then bigger companies where sometimes customers are just a number and everyone is just a unit of production. Now I can see a big company dealing with another big company that makes sense to me, but I can see individual home owners and small time business people using small time local trash haulers. Actually whats nice about being a small time trash hauler is you're not going out of state unless you're located right on a state border, but here in Cleveland you're pretty much in the greater Cleveland area so you just need intrastate operating authority which is easier to obtain then DOT interstate authority and most of these small time outfits operate in a try county area there all with in 100 air miles of the terminal so log books and that stuff aren't really a thing and they can kind of run under the radar, so they have a nice little prosperous niche business going.

So today was the quadruple quadfecta in my neighborhood. Today was the kick off of yard waste collection season and also "bulk" trash day.
My neighbor threw out some furniture and I watched the guys using a rear load Leach 2R3 eat an entire couch.
I thought it'll be a while before garbage gets picked up because of all the trash today, but I was wrong, by lunch time they had pretty much my entire neighborhood done. I think they had (2) trucks on yard waste, and whoever was on yard waste had there work cut out for them as the yard waste was plentiful for the kick off of the yard waste disposal season. -
I don't know if I like this way to pick up leaves, but I do like how a lot of cities and municipalities still keep the past some what alive. This garbage truck is straight out of the 1990s Leach 2RII with municipal blue painted refuse body. This trucks working up in Michigan for a city up there.

That equipment to pick leaves does seem horribly inefficient. The places round by me have a L9000 tandem axle converted dump truck with a vactor body n a big hose. Seems pretty effective and efficient- no scraps left, no muck, no dirt idk the yardage it holds.Mike2633 Thanks this. -
