3406 3zJ/7fb rebuild

    I think @wore out was referring to the IPD kit. The numbers he suggested was for the PEEC 460 Cat cylinder packs and he gave matching nozzle number. Many of two piece piston combos out there in high HP application. Steel tops tolerate way more abuse than aluminum piston for over the road trucks. Most all newer engines use steel monothern pistons.
    Biggest downfall I have seen in 2 piece setup is cracked aluminum skirts. If not caught quickly in will ventilate an engine block.

    What nozzle runs with a steel top 14.6 piston tho? 8789 I think?

    Spsauerland: I see, so the 2 piece pistons are actually good to use for high hp applications as well?

    So if I were to rebuild the 3406E, just replace the pistons with a new set of 2 piece pistons or go with the steel monotherm pistons?

    One piece steel piston were introduced in Cat on-highway engines beginning with the ACERT. The 3406E or C-15 used 2 piece pistons in all higher HP. IPD does offer a monothern steel for the 3406E, but offer no warranty with it. If going with genuine Cat, 2 piece articulated is only option for you.

    For the 3406b mechanical pump, is it possible for it to feel lazy if the engine was always pulling light easy loads?

    Like the fuel rack only going so far and stopping in a position it always stops in? Then couldn’t travel more even though there is more travel?

    I had a job of hauling 95,000 lb loads of logs last winter with a b-train and the first few days felt slow and lazy. Truck has always been slow and lazy up to that point.

    Then I noticed the boost gauge started getting higher and higher. It used to always max at 16 psi. Now it’s approximately 27 psi.

    Even the fuel mileage took quite a hit but the truck was pulling better than it ever had since I started at the company.

    Well finally got my 3zj back on the road. Ended up going with an ipd kit and a reman head out of Minneapolis (Half price of cat). Also put in new nozzles. Turns out the old nozzles weren’t even matching lol. 2 different model numbers. 3 of each.

    only concern now is I have lower oil pressure than before... that can’t be good. Running 48ish psi at 1500 rpm under load. Used to be 52-54. And my old b block never went below 55.
    Any thoughts?

    Most common mistake is where the outlet tube of pump connects to block is a machine surface needs to be absolutely clean no gasket or sealer of any kind. Also if a piston cooling nozzle isnt sitting in the slot just right they will be ####ed up and leak there which will cause a pressure drop.

    Thanks, will pull the valves covers off to see if it’s I’m losing some pressure by the Jake heads. And if that doesn’t help will check out the pump and cooling nozzles like you suggest.
