Hello all, I have a 3zj 3406C that is rated at 350hp and I am hoping to get some more power out of it. I believe it is a full mechanical (has a throttle linkage, no drive by wire).
I am admittedly very new to trucking & wrenching but am very eager to put in the time to learn how to do it right. What are your recommendations for first steps & other things I need to identify before moving forward?
Thanks in advance!
3406C needs more power... How would you start?

My opinion varies from most but do not advance the timing all Willie nillie like most tell you. If it’s an 11.5 motor go no farther than 14 on the meter. If it’s a 9.5 go no farther than 12. No meter no advance it’s not worth guessing. Now that that’s out of the way run a good overhead. Make sure beyond all doubt it’s performing as it absolutely should as in no boost leaks getting plenty of fuel and nozzles are spraying correctly. Then we can add a little fuel and a turbo.
I’m not trying to be a dick here at all. I’ve spent a lifetime around these motors and I Do not mind a bit to share my knowledge. I have learned that sharing too much too soon has the opposite effect of my goal. Which is to save a guy fresh starting some time and money. They tend to not grasp the importance of a couple things and it cost them big time and I feel like ####. So I’m gonna let everyone else tell you the wrong way and I’ll come along and correct them. Then you decide who you should believe and I’m off the hook lol. -
Before I do anything I plan on doing some "monitoring mods". My rig is an older unit with a fairly limited amount of instrumentation (1993 Ford L9000, 205k miles) so I've currently got a good boost gauge and pyro on order. My goals are not anything too crazy; If I can get a healthy 425-450hp while still maintaining proper reliability I will be a happy guy.
I'm sure each configuration varies, but does this sound like a fairly realistic goal to achieve with minimal mods?‘Olhand, Deere hunter and wore out Thank this. -

Check a couple of basics first, make sure your throttle linkage is giving it full fuel and have you checked if your afrc diaphram is good?
