Having issues with my 1996 Kw w900
Has a early 3406E. To make a long story short. I started my truck about two weeks ago in the morning and when it started it had a hard misfire and a lot of smoke. The smoke is blueish and after 10 or so minutes it kinda clears up but it's smoking blue. When I take off down the road an the truck warms up to operating temp the miss is gone and no smoke. So I had the CAT mechanic plus into my truck and did a cylinders cut out test. Found the #5 cylinder was missing. So i replaced #5 injector and had no change at all. Still same symptoms in the morning and after coming off a big hill with the Jake on it would studder and miss then clear up. Had the CAT guy look at it again and run another cylinder cut out test and said the #1 injector was bad. Replaced that and still have the same issues. I have checked the check valve in the fuel pump and also another check valve in this fuel block deal that loacted right next to my fuel filter. I didn't find anything wrong that I could tell. Wondering if my

The cold miss / smoke symptom sure sounds like a blown head gasket.

Could be as simple as a leaking injector. If it's running good once warm, I wouldn't worry about it.

Take a good look and smell your coolant. Might be a injector cup.

I have seen some cats with similar issue that they pass injector test warm but have cold misfire. I would say do the cylinder cutout right when you fire it up to see which cylinder it is. Then go from there. I would check that no air is getting past that injector or its not leaking.

Check harness may have a voltage drop to injectors. They get brittle with age and oil seeps in causing all kid of issues.

White smoke is coolant burning off, blueish smoke is fuel.

I have done the cylinder cut out test when it's cold and the number 5 cylinder is the one that's missing when cold. I replaced the number 5 cylinder injector and still am having the same problem. Last week before I replaced the #5 injector I had the CAT guy plug into my truck after it had been running all day and he did a injector test and told me the number 1 injector was bad. I have looked over all the wiring on the engine going to the ECM and from what I can see it's in good shape. So rubbed wires or anything like that. Guess I'm still wondering if it could be the ECM going out? If it was the ECM I would think it would miss all the time? Thanks

Have you had the valves adjusted yet? Id almost bet money the #5 tapered injector seat thats part of the head casting is is leaking or youve got a bad headgasket, or cracked head.

If its the injector seat leaking compression up by it can be reseated without removing the head. Just takes a slight resurface.
