I have a 5EK 3406E that's using some water but there is no visible leaks
And no water in oil or oil in water but I do I have some steam coming outta
the blow by hose and the inside of the hose has milky oil gunk in it. I'm wondering
if maybe water leaking past a liner and into the warm oil and steaming out? I've
been running it this way for the last 6 months and had no problems but I finally have some downtime so I'd like
to figure it out. I did just replace the water pump because I thought the water might have been getting
in the oil there but it still seems to be the same. Thank you
3406E head/liner question

Also, I did the bottle test and I didn't have any bubbles so that's why
I'm unsure if it's a head gasket -
Drop the pan and pressure up the coolant system it will either leak beside a liner(pitted, o'rings ect) or oil gallery(head gasket). But don't forget to check the oil cooler too. If the muck in the blowby isn't tinted the same color as your antifreeze it might just be condensation.
logtrucker25 and EverLuc Thank this. -
How much is "some" water? and in what period of time?
-
About a gallon a week. Is it possible it could evaporate from the warm oil? Because there
doesnt seem to be water in the oil when I drain it -
Milky oil is not good. X2 on dropping the pan & pressurizing. You will certainly see where the "coolant" is leaking. Water will rust and pit liners in a hurry. X2 on checking oil cooler. It only takes a few minutes to remove that cooler tube.

He said milky oil in the blow by tube.
A gallon a week isn't anything I would be real concerned with. You could possibly be filling the truck a gallon over the sweet spot of where the level likes to sit. Some truck will just throw out extra coolant if too high. By what you've described you truck doesn't have a blown headgasket or a bad liner o-ring. If coolant was getting in the oil it would be very obviously when you pull the dip stick.
Personally I wouldn't waste my time and money pulling the pan. -
he never said it was getting water in the oil, he acually said it wasnt getting any in the oil. also said it wasnt getting any oil in the coolant. pulling the pan and pressurizing the system isnt gonna tell you anything.
more than likely, just like underpsi said, you may just be overfilling the coolant. unless the truck is running hot, it doesnt sound like anything to worry bout. -
just pressurize the rad and let it sit. check the pressure gauge in 30 minutes or so. if it hadnt dropped drive it. no need to drop pan.
-
Ok. Don't pressurize it. Keep adding coolant. You know your engine better than anybody else. If you feel it is normal to add a gallon a week because you haven't found the "sweet" spot for the coolant level @ what is it now, $13 a gallon for gold top Cat coolant, then it is what it is.
