I was under the impression that if your out of hours you can NOT operate a commercial vehicle period....

    *I may be wrong though*

Not commercially. But you are allowed to drop the trailer & use the tractor as a personal vehicle. Go to the movies, shopping, fishing, whatever.....

But if the person is a company driver, he needs WRITTEN permission from the carrier that states that he can go off duty as he sees fit.

    BROKENSPROKET and groundpounder Thank this.

No, you do NOT need "written" permission.

That's why it is in the "regulations" to ALLOW it.

I used to "play tourist" and go all over the place when layed over.

    Funny story......

I dropped on friday evening at a container yard in NOLA.
No load til sunday was available.

Called boss, and he said "you can hang out or go home. whatever you wanna do."

    "OKAY"

Went to line 1, and bobtailed to MERIDIAN, MS.

Got stopped and DOT'd in Laurel, and the DOT guy was nonchalant when I told him I was on line 1 cause I was using the tractor as personal vehicle to go home til sunday.

But lets be HONEST about this use......
    Some guys abuse the loophole.

There is a HUGE difference between dropping a trailer and going 10 or 20 miles around town to the movies/mall/walmart.... and deadheading 300 miles to go get your next load.

If you are going to use it to run across town, you are just fine on line 1.
If you are going from Sacramento to LA for a load, then you have to log line 3.
