Going to show my age here... I bought one of the first "Car Phone" in 1986 Had it installed in my Chevy Monte Carlo...Felt so cool, I was 19 years old with a car phone..
Funny thing is, I think the phone was worth more then the car..
I paid or I financed 1900.00 for the equipment, and my bill usually ran me at least 100.00 a month.. One month on a road trip around the mid west, I really didn't understand the "Roaming" part of the service, I got my bill and it was over 700.00 for the month, needless to say the phone was used sparingly after that ...
Like the article all the equipment was installed in the trunk, the computer it took to run it was about the size of an average lap top of today, but weighed about 20-25 pounds, the phone itself was mounted on a cradle post on the transmission "hump"
just in front of the front seats, (basically the same area where a manual transmission would be) The phone itself was the about the same size as a normal wall phone.. Oh and the antenna was installed on the back window... Its funny when I look at my cell phone now, not much bigger then a credit card, and cost 1700.00 less then it did then... The monthly bill hasn't changed much....LOL Except , I've never had a 700.00 bill yet... (Knock on wood) It must say something about the carrier back then, since they are still in business to this day, they started put as Cellular one, then became Airtouch, then yep.... Now Verizon Wireless.... ..
