Does anyone know how many turns each way the steering wheel turns in a 2012 peterbilt 386? I got 2.5 to the right and 1.5 to the left.

No idea how many specifically but it sounds like you need the drag link adjusted. If its non-adjustable and nothing is bent or broken, could be someone put the pitman arm on incorrectly (wrong spline).

I moved the splines to get two turns each way but the steering wheel was turned upside down. Took it to a shop and they replaced the drag link and realigned the splines. He put it right back to where it was before and says it's timed to peterbilt specs. I got a friend with a 379 that has 2.5 turns each way so I'm thinking something might be messed up in the gearbox. Just wanted to ask on here before I go buy a new steering gearbox. His 379 turns sharper than this 386.

No 2 trucks are the same. It all comes down to a number of variables. Steering box design, axle stop bolt settings, etc. If it turned ok and the knuckle was close to or touching the axle stop bolts when you had it set for 2 turns/side, that's probably how it wad designed. I would be hesitant to throw away a steering box when it may not be the issue.

Is it possible someone changed a steering column u-joint and installed the steering shaft 180 degrees out? Then to cover it up they monkeyed around with the pitman arm until the wheel was straight? I don't advise doing that unless that is exactly what happened. There's usually wiring in the steering wheel for the horn or steering wheel controls that can get damaged if you free spin it too far in either direction.

I checked to see if it was hitting the axle stop bolts. At 2.5 to the right, it still has room to turn more before hitting. The left side has a big gap. It might be possible about the u joint but not sure. I bought it off a fleet and it was like this. The truck had 465k on it but i can see the power steering pump has been replaced and the steering gearbox has been off because the paint is off the nuts. I'm assuming that most work would have been done by peterbilt since it was probably still under warranty. The warranty had just ended when I bought it.

I believe there are relief poppets inside the box so you should always have a small gap between the knuckle and stop bolt. I seem to recall there being a procedure to adjust them. Been a long time since I dealt with them unfortunately.

    jklopez09 Thanks this.
