32 years and I have missed just one Christmas . That one I spent with family in Arizona . I have always told anyone that I work for that I will be home for Christmas or I will be working for someone else .
I will miss any other day of the year but Christmas is not one that I will miss for anyone ! I never had to have a job bad enough for that.
3rd Christmas away from home.

I've missed many Christmas' over the years through trucking & military. My children did just fine in life; their ages from 47 down to 6 yrs. old.

I decided to work this year, and am sitting at PFG in Temple, TX. waiting for an unload in the morning. Then I'll spend Christmas at the Flying Pee-lot in Waco.
camaro68 and NavigatorWife Thank this. -
If Crete fails to get me home for Christmas Day, it'll be their third strike in less than 11 months, and I'll be looking.
They've already caused me to miss two important days. The third will be the last.
To all of you....get home safe, and have a Merry Christmas!camaro68 and NavigatorWife Thank this. -
I won't be driving on Christmas, but I will be sitting here by myself in Washington, PA while my wife is in Brooksville, Florida. I guess sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do, but I'll admit it SUCKS! This will be the worst Christmas I've had by far.

My husband is on the road and our children are grown now and have kids. In past years when he worked as a journeyman electrician on the road we sometimes would end up having serveral Christmas days in Dec, one with grandparents, one with all of us on whatever day he managed to be home and then I would have one with them on Christmas day. It didn't have to be even a lot of gifts, just what we had spaced out for the occasion.
Perhaps if you can get home even a day or two late, your wife can hold off the fort in this manner and make it fun doing so. Your oldest one will be the one who knows the days of the week, unless the calendar disappears if possible. Perhaps even grandparents can be talked into the plan. Kids are flexible and the main thing is to have fun and no matter what day of the week it is celebrated.
Like some have stated I wouldn't push your luck by taking off on your own. I am sure most companies try the best they can to get drivers home, but the lack communication from the powers that be is terrible I think and leads to so much confusion.
Merry Christmas all, and Happy New Year. -
Didn't spend last year or this year on the road for Christmas. Didn't take time any time off since Labor Day though either so I could put the request in the system in Oct. Even got home for Thanksgiving without asking. Our dispatcher called up and said he was sending us home for it.
Five out of the first six years my wife and I were together we never spent Christmas together anyways. She always wanted to go back to Indiana for Christmas and I didn't, so I stayed home. -
i have always told everyone iv ever worked for ill work any holiday but when it comes to thanks giving and Christmas i will give up one but not both. I normally end up working thanksgiving and come Christmas ill tell them i worked thanks giving not working Christmas period. I would even fly myself home and back out if i had to. I have worked a couple Christmas's in the past but i had been off on thanksgiving. and got home shortly after Christmas. I am enjoying a week at home right now i will be working new years however.
merry Christmas to everyone, if you are stuck in your truck somewhere try to make the best of it.NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
Merry Christmas to you Trashtrucker. Sorry you can't be home with the family. Holidays are a state of mind we put ourselves into so I hope you can enjoy the day and have some fun even if just listening to the radio and getting out to eat. Thankgoodness we have cell phones which help also to keep connected to the family.

Hubby and I are on a dedicated route now... Kid is grown with a family of her own... We celebrated 'Christmas' with them last Thursday... The day we are at home... Thankfully for us it's not so much a specific day, but a celebration of faith and family.
Wishing all of you a Merry Christmas, and Joy when you do have a chance to be with family... No matter what day that falls on!!
